shifting winds (video)

well, heres a short video that a friend made for me from a sketchy shifty wind day. winds were from NNE 12mph-NNW 22mph, and i was using the 19m charger. Wasn't an ideal day for flying but I just wanted to be out there.

Look at the loftings around 1:40-2:00. some of those werent purposeful jumps, they were just getting control of a lofting. be careful of flying in these wind conditions, and time for me to get a new helmet.

can someone embed this for me please?

Mood: low winds here I come

[*] posted on 17-9-2011 at 03:52 PM

Nice video! Winds like that suck big time. I think 3 out of 5 sessions I get are in conditions like that. Way more work than anything I find. One second you are nicely powered for a jump, when you swing the kite around all you end up with is a tiny bunny hop. Not fun at all. One thing I can say is that field is way nicer, and much bigger than anything I've got to ride.

that's the truth too. when i ride out here, i can never tell how things are going to go. sometimes i'm just stoked to get in the air, while others i can be 20ft in the air (which is rare here)

I was so discouraged when i first started riding, but when I hit the beach its just trick after trick after trick.

timing a 360 is scary when you don't know if you are going to be lifted or dropped lol.

i'm dissapointed in the tricks in this session, but i'm happy that everybody can see the winds that i normally fly in

yeah no kidding. being in the ozark mountains chops up the wind bad. where I grew up is in Springfield IL. My parents still live there, so whenever i go to visit I get some of my best inland sessions there. the wind is so nice flowing over all of those miles of endless empty fields in the fall and spring.

i can't wait to be at WWBB though, i'm hoping i'll get another day of 30-40mph sea breeze :wee:

Adam you might want hold off on dropping a lot of ballast , there is a problem with hot air balloons that happens when they are allowed to pop up too quickly. I forget the details but I remember its a baaad thing. I have a baaad feeling that the same issues may be involved in a rapidly rising kite.

With the hot air balloon being "loaded" with hot air and the cutting loos the ground ropes, it could jump up and the apparent wind from above could push out lots of hot air, leaving the balloon with not enough lift. Different mechanics with the kite.

no worries dudes, i won't take any out of the norm risks. just getting stoked. I didn't even know that it was possible to take out a 12m charger in 30-40mph winds until i went to wwbb this spring. smooth sea breeze is way better than the gusties out here.

i'm not gonna do anything stupid, i cant afford a trip to the hospital

I was thinking more about this video. Someone not knowing about the winds you were flying in would think you didn't have much skill. Set up for a jump and then get nothing from the kite because the wind died right before liftoff. Off axis landings because your lift and float weren't predictable. You deserve kudos for flying a 19 on land in those winds. I think we learn more from watching someone struggle than we do watching them do something perfectly. Perfect is fun to watch too though.:thumbup:

its funny you say that bob. theres a local whos started flying with me this summer and he has moved to a 12m LEI. he's 40 years old and a triathlete who owns an electrical company. He first saw me and i could tell right away that he thought that i sucked at this. He then used some trainer kites and moved to depower. he told me that he wanted to start competing and traveling to the different events, and he also has a buisness plan written up because he wants to start a kite school here.

After the last few sesssions out here, he's learned that he can't even make it to his board, forget about even standing on it lol. he can't even walk from point A to point B while attached to his kite. Ive told him how different it is flying on the coast vs inland gusties. its a huge difference

for me flying locally, i'm so happy if i can even land one 360 or one footer .

When i go to the coast its trick after trick. I'll never forget when i first got to NABX and within the first hour of riding I had already pulled a 720 over Marijn as he was taking photos. I was in heaven!!!

the only thing that sucks is it is frustrating flying here, but i feel like a king when i get to an event and I can just jump all day and land lots of tricks. I can't wait to hit up NABX again next year!
