Winter biking anyone

Very interesting piece of equipment. Convert your bicycle into a manual snowmobile. The next question is does it actually work in anything but groomed trails???? I can see powder being an issue.

Tried a earlier version years ago. It's okay for some things but really more of a pain in the backside than anything. Does not handle at all like a bike as you can imagine.

The first video looks like it may have been shot at Sunday River. You'll notice the dually that the system is mounted on is an old Klein URT design. I've never seen it on a Vpp, DW or even Horst Link design so I suspect it works best with hardtails and URTs.

It works great on the groomers in the video but a pair of Nokian Hakkapellitas 2.3 on a 40mm rim would work just as well AND they will work on ice. (see pic of wife in the middle of 200' powerslide circa 1997)

There are ski bike systems out there that adapt the bike to skis front and rear for use on lift access in the winter time. For descending they work a lot better IMO.

We used to winter bike a lot before we got into kites. Now I have kites and don't even have a remote interest in riding my bike in the winter time.

When I lived in Thompson MB, I used to mountain bike the snow mobile trails if the temperature was >-40C. Below that it was a bit hard on the lungs. I had tire chains for the front wheel for stability on ice. Biking was better in the winter: no black flies.

Is it possible to design for strength, if the designer doesn't really understand what strength is?

I'ved made two winter season as bicycle~courrier in Montreal downtown. On a "normal" peugeot 10speed. The worst thing were salty humidity caused by lot of de-icing salt used to clean the street. Each dollar were well earned! But still had very good memories...
