Chicken loop length

Reading the hook vs wheel thread a comment in that thread has gotten me thinking (ALWAYS dangerous)

I keep finding myself with the full load of the kite on my arms and not going thru my loop and harness.

Just measured and my current setup is 14.5" from bar center to inside of chickenloop where it would ride on a hook. I have a Ronstan QR clasp on my harness as a double safety and that adds another 2.5, for a total of 17" from harness to bar.

I am a tall guy but I find at full turn I feel overextended and then end up brining the bar load full on my arms on exiting a kite turn and just keep holding it.

Wonder if I should look at shortening up the line between CL and bar a bit so I don't feel like I am reaching for the bar? I am thinking it might help stop the tendancy I have of holding the bar with my arms?:puzzled:

Oh I am using a climbing harness for now, so no spreader bar/hook, that is why I have the ronstan inplace to mate the harness and chicken loop..

Could you post some pics? What kind of bar/CL is this?

Number seems a little high. :puzzled: But that could just be a lack of coffee.

Sam

I'll pull out some bars in the morning, and amuse the wee ones by donning a harness indoors.

The things that are adding length to your set up are:
  1. The Wichard shackle
  2. The older Ozone FB chicken loop (which I believe is larger than the standard Megatron chicken loop... although there is a larger chicken loop for the Megaton that Ozone makes for people whose knuckle drag on the ground).
  3. The segment (with the neoprene shroud) between the chicken loop and velcro connection point for the bar.

None of them are particularly long by themselves, but they add up.

Which climbing harness and shackle are you using?

Will try to post some pics and measurements in the morning for comparison.

ATB,
Sam
