Snowkite Season is Here!!! The Magic of the Big Horns

Six years ago I first kited the Big Horns and experienced a mind-blowing five days of snow, wind, and snowkite freedom. Every year since, I have come back. Sometimes I come back in spring, sometimes in winter, sometimes in autumn. It really doesn’t matter. Every time the kiting has been phenomenal. This same opinion is echoed by every kiter I know. Everyone agrees: There are few places that rival the Big Horns. First you can drive to 9500 feet. Next, the place is a magnet for storms. Third, it’s no wheat field, these are real mountains. Add to that the Bear Lodge Resort (hot tub, pool, lodging, bar…), the Big Horns are hard to beat in the lower 48.

Here it is mid-October and I can’t believe that the winter of 2012 has begun. It’s only been a scant 3 and a half months since I left the snow in mid-June (for work) and now I’m back in the Biggies ripping soft fall chowder, fully lit on my 9m Frenzy, snowkite season is ON!

Our first day we had warm, spring-like temps. It was a great start to the season. The second day was stormy and everyone bailed. That left me for a solo session on Lil Baldy. On Monday, the third day, I awoke to 4” of fresh pow, blue sky, and wind. As I made the morning commute from the Bear Lodge I’m awestruck with the beauty and magic of the Big Horns. Best of all the wind is from the NW allowing me to easily climb both Bald and Lil Bald Mtns. On both peaks I made tracks in soft, fluffy powder and made repeated laps wherever I found it deep. Fresh powder, sunshine, wind made for a perfect day in the mountains of Wyoming.

Thanks for reading and see ya out there,

Noah

I was thinking about a water session today and you are riding on snow. Just 40 minutes to water or 8 hours to snow. :dunno: Looks like a great place. Someday I will make it to a place like that.

Looks outstanding.
I checked out bearlodgeresort.com and their rustic cabins are only $36 a night through mid November BUT NO INFO ON HOW TO GET THERE. Where do you fly into? Do you need to rent a 4 wheel drive this late in the year?

Great pictures in your NW kiting post. http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-24408.html

I love Nahant but rarely get there anymore.

That looks amazing. Definitely interested, if only I had the time...

So... information. Where would I fly into? Where would I stay? How would I get there once on the ground? lol. What is the best time of the year, or does it NOT have an "off time" once the snow is there?

I would be keen on trying to do a weekend trip out there sometime, maybe on a four-day weekend or something like that. Definitely need more information though.

Thanks!

Wow! What you NW guys won't do for fun! That "kite hunting"(family forum) sport looks to be as tough as the biatholon! Imagine doing it off a snowboard!

That is about 5 hours from here and certainly worth for a weekend of kiting. I am going to have to check that out. Do you need a snowmobile or can you kite from the road? I am going to have to start trying to round somebody up to head out that way. Thanks for the motivation.

Are there any kite spots along highway 16 between buffalo and Tensleep? I have Friday off and am thinking about a trip out that way if the wind looks good. I am just curious if that south side of the big horns has any good wind and terrain or if I should just head out toward Bald mountain. I have never been out there to kite and think that it is about time.

I my self have never showkited there but I am from there you can fly in to Casper and rent a car . But also think of this the road will close for sometime late This month till it starts to warm up. But you get some guys that have been there you can stay in Sheridan rent some snowmobiles an then you can get in to there or even more .

Work will be slowing down here in a week or two so I plan to be there for three weeks in dec. I have famly there and some snowmobiles . Everyone is walcome to come:ninja:
