Ozone Razor 5.5m

I know this kite is no longer production. Ozone now has a new high aspect wing in production, but I'm not sure of the name. Anyways, you can still find these around. I'm surprized by the lack of any mention of these amazing kites of this forum.

For starters, this kite is about as aggressive as they come. I've put it next to similar sized Blade in about a 12 knot wind, and the Razor had noticably more power and speed. It handles remarkably well, and is VERY well made (kudos to Ozone) Its upwind performance is astounding, given that it creates a decent pull even at the very edge of the window

Although I bought this one specifically for Buggying, I love it for Boarding, and it has become my absolute favorite for jumping (a bit scary - but in a good way!).

Now for the down side: Unlike some other kites, the Razor requires much more active control of your brake lines. It will generate enough speed that it will easily shoot past the window and ball up on you. Simply shortening the brake lines doesn't solve the issue, because it tends to rob some of its potential power.

This kite is definately NOT for novices. It will hurt you BAD!! But if you are a skilled flyer, and want an incredible adrenaline rush? Check one of these out.

The new kite is the Yakuza. Dont forget to mention the Razor is super unstable, as is every super high performance, super HiAR Kite. Super fast in beach winds though. As for jumping.. you got it, tons of pop, no hang time.

Unstable!?! I don't know if I'd call it "unstable"? "Precocious" maybe. "Highly strung" or "AHDH ish" Definately. But "unstable"? That's just too negative sounding. Sounds like a "rabid dog" or something. I'd like to think of it as more of "steroid laden race horse" You know exacty WHAT it's going to do, you just have to careful not to let it do TOO MUCH of it. :D

As far as the hang time goes, I've managed to achieve decent hang times by applying brakes and manouvering the kite while in the air. Granted, it not the plushest landing in the world, but i've never been dropped.

Anyway, thanks for name of the new model. (what the heck is a yazuka anyway)

later.

Yakuza are the worlds largest crime ring based in Japan.

The kite is likely so named for its agressive profile, speed, etc.

Hey Bucky how are you. I noticed that you also fly a JOJO Rage, i was wondering if maybe you can help me set-up my 6 M Rage that i haven't use since i bought it. I have flown a 3 M traction kite on handles and transitioning to bar but have no idea how to configure it due to the JOJO's extra sheeting bridles. Here's my other post: http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=2016
Thanks.

Jojo Rage

Hey Cubensis:

How is your Jojo setup currently? Does it use a pulley system on the bridle setup like the 12m? Also, what kind of bar are you using?

If you give me some more specifics, maybe I can help you get up and flying.

To be honest however, I've only taken my 12m Rage out a couple of dozen times due its really narrow wind range. So I would really not consider myself an expert on this kite. I'm still getting some of the bugs worked out myself. Nevertheless, I've got it up and flying, and maybe I can help.

Let me know.

Thanks Bucky! Okay here's the deal, my 6 M JOJO Rage has 1 pulley located next to each of the 2 main steering bridle knot and on both pulley runs a line that runs from each wingtip to the mid-section of the kite. All the bridles at the bottom of the kite connects to one single point and i would imagine this is connected to the brake line. And then of course the mid section sheeting bridles that runs from wing tip to wing tip and all connect to one single point just like the brake bridles. This is how i received the kite brand new and have never use it yet. I also have 4- 27 meter lines (500 lbs. test) and a 58 cm. Cabrinha Alloy Control Bar with its normal steering leaders on each end of the bar, a harness loop, trim strap connected to the chicken loop through a hole in the middle of the bar and what seemed to be a safety wrist leash. They're all new items and have never try setting it up until i know exactly how to configure it.
How do you like your 12 M Rage? Does that pulley system really helps increase the turning speed of the kite? Thanks again for any suggestions you may have.

Hey cubensis:

Sounds like you got everything you need.

Here's a website that shows the the proper handle setup:

www.scskydivers.com/jojo-manual-rage.html

Better than trying to explain it all in writing

And yes, the pulley system does work, espessially on my 12m. The thing is so damned big, that without it, I wouldn't be able to swing it under without crashing it to the ground!! It is adjustable for each side, right up on the bridle setup. Adjust so that when in a turn, the far sides pulley system has almost tension on it.

Also this kite is very 4-line (or in this case 3-lined) biased. It flies better with a suitable amount of brake applied thoughout the flight.

Hope that gets you up and going. If you have any more questions let me know.

Later...

Thanks Bucky. So it looked like the Rage's configuration is way different from the Ozone Frenzy (main steering lines connected to chicken loop, back lines to bar ends). What kind of control bar are you using? Where is your brake line hooked up to, to your wrist or your waist/seat harness?

It's an old beatup cabhrina (did I spell that right?) 30" bar. (Big bar....Big kite...) And I usually hook them on my wrist or the bar with a big wide leader that I can just reach out and grab. (even if throw the bar and have just brakes on, this kite can pull like a bear, so I'd much rather have nothing hooked on to me that I can't just pop off)

Hope the website helped.

I have flown several sizes of Razors and agree that you need some skills but wouldn't say it was unstable. It does like clean winds like most race kites and will over run the window if you let it.

The Yakuza is a new breed of racing kite and takes a lot of flying to keep her going but as any one who follows the racing circuit will tell you they are always in the top positions in the finals.
