the "Mike Dobbs Ivitational" buggybash **video**

All I can say is HELL YEAH !!! we had a great time today at the Long Beach section of NY's beautiful beaches. Forum member Mike Dobbs put out an invite yesterday to join him, and Martinipro and I were able to make it out. Forecast was for 13-17mph s/sw, which is dead onshore for this beach..:thumbup: However when we got there is was blowing a steady 24mph. It did get stronger here and there. I wanna say gusts but it wasn't that sharp on and off like a gust(if that makes any sense). Of course when I heard the forecast
i took both of my 2m kites and my 3m apex OUT of my kitebag and left them home....:ticking::ticking: dont worry they had good company, i also left my Phannies home... :ticking::ticking::mad: leaving me a 2.5 Century and a 3.5 Profoil to play with in these nukin winds.

So its the three of us and a local guy who has a place on the boardwalk (luck-eeeeee) and several guys out in the water. Later a friend of Mike's who is a Kiteboard instructor shows up and has his first go in a buggy.

My nephew PHOTO-MAT joined us with a new Canon5d and caught some video while he learned the nuances of this camera.....

Enjoy..... :wee:

Yes Larry, all with the 5d. It was his first time out with it, so still getting the hang of focusing on the fly.

@Rich - yeah it flew me hard alright... :ticking: but I got my revenge. Wish I had a gps... Definitely some of my best runs ever

This was an awesome afternoon of buggying- so glad everyone who was there could make it out- rest assured I will keep my eyes on the forecast for the next good day!

@PhotoMatt Awesome vid man! Thank you so much for taking the time to put that together. You've got some nice editing skills- the vid really told the story of the day nicely : ) :bigok:

@lamrinth The 5D is sick! I think the framerate thing might be an instance where bigger isn't better. Video is traditionally shot at 30FPS (29.97 actually), but film has always been shot at 24FPS (probably an interesting story behind why, but I don't know it). The 5D shoots video at 24FPS which gives you the look of film, with all the perks of digital video. That lower frame rate is something you only find on the better DSLR cameras, like the 5D :singing:

Hey guys.... It's Photo-Mat, this is my alias, aka, pen name, etc lol.... Matt Swade

Had a blast yesterday... The winds were crazy, couldnt hear yourself talk. Cheezy, Mike Dobbs, and the rest of the crew were flying up and down the beach. Had a chance to meet some new peeps too...

This was really my 1st outing with the 5D MKII so please excuse some of the out of focus shots, some was done for creativity, most was done cause its tricky trying to zoom and adjust focus (with one hand) at the same time while your fingers are cold... lol
I have an HD version of the vid I can also upload if anyone wants.

In reference to the 5D MkII... it is an awesome camera... full 1080 at 24 or 30fps...
When objects are standing still or at least moving so i can focus properly it produces awesome video... I was using my 70-200 2.8 which isnt stabilized... Im gonna have to fix that to keep the video smooth. Or at least get a decent tripod.

Cheezy

Awesome video, my complements to Photo-Mat. I know that you guys had great time. I bet you will be wearing that well deserved grin for whole week.

I am glad you got out in such good conditions. The beach also looks like a great place to ride; I hope you get out again soon. I know that I say this a lot, but more seat time is really going to make you a better buggier.

Keep the progress reports coming. And next time the forecast looks good let me know, I will try to join you.

BTW: I've been meaning to ask since you posted that vid the weekend of Wildwood- what kind of kite is that you're flying? I've never seen one like it...

Hey Mike, I'm about 25 mi. from Watertown, 60 mi. to Canada! So a day trip for me would likely have to be an overnighter. I love flying the NASA Para Wing. It's been around since the Gemini program, Its intended use(by NASA) was to bring in the solid rocket boosters used at launch, but was scrapped for just dropping them in the ocean and letting the Navy pick them up. Being single layer, they are very light for their size, my 7M weighs just under a pound, so they fly in very little wind.(also less expensive to build) I guess because they are not too 'lifty', they are considered noobie kites, but they will still yank you pretty good!(and take some skill to get the most out of them) Unfortunately, because they are in the public domain, few manafacturer's still produce them, but our own NPW goddess will build you one of any size and most colors. My 2.4 and 4.8 were by HQ, my 7M is by kitemaker4.

Hey Cheezy- I'll have to remember to bring a GPS next time we hit LB.

In the meantime I had some time to kill today so I went through some of the footage from my GoPro. With some satellite imagery (courtesy of Google Maps) and some basic mathematics I came up with average speeds of between 18 and 20 mph between Jetties:

I think you were going even faster! :wee:
