Since I'm just on the cusp of being able to cut loose with a video or 2, would vimeo be less of a hassle?

As long as you include the "buy this song on itunes" link as part of the video while giving proper credit, you're usually good to go.
Vimeo is....better and worse. Not instant viewing, but less soundtrack removal.

How do you include that link?
I've had YouTube attach that link to a couple of my videos- but recently I had audio removed from one and the link never showed up.

To date, knock on good wood zero problems with Vimeo. Plus member that will allow quicker upload time that I don't mind donating to a great site that
simply works. YouTube stripped the music from one of my first videos and I never looked back. I allow my videos to be downloaded and saved to your
computer for those who experience problems viewing Vimeo.

Looks like YouTube did a fairly extensive sweep fairly recently. Lots of yanked videos and bounced users.
Quick, hide the puppies and kittens !!! :o

Music on youTube all depends on on what music company has rights to the song and what deals that company have with various countries. As far as I am
aware - we don't have anything to do with the 'buy this song on iTunes' - that all depends on the company. If it's owned by WMG, then your right out
of luck. Some companies like Sony, or BMG may allow the song to be played in the US, England, Sweden and Botswana and nowhere else. (that's just a
real rough eg - not actual!)
Here's a couple of things I do if I'm unsure whether youTube will let me use a song or not. Search for the song on youTube and see who has uploaded
it. If no-one except the official band site or publisher has it, then steer well clear. If heaps of people are using it with the 'buy from iTunes'
then you're usually good to go.
Or.... you can make a quick 2 or 3 minute video really compressed so it's small and put the song in question on it....load it up and see what happens.
If it loads up ok, then delete it and load up or keep working on your actual video.
As for Vimeo Vs youTube.... it's a bit weird. Vimeo won't take your song off the video unless the record company complains about it. It's still
technically illegal - and they tell you that but they don't take action unless they receive complaints. BUT, try and load up copied video content -
like a news report or something cut and pasted off the TV and they will remove it asap. Whereas youtube seems to be completely the other way 'round.
Has me scratching my head sometimes.
One thing in youTube's favor is that most forums will allow you to embed the video straight into your post. I don't think we can embed Vimeo videos
here the same way. Perhaps a few requests to the PKF forum gurus?

It's called "paying homage" and unless I'm making money out of using their songs, then they're just being wankers. The whole irony in all his is that
the WMG who hammers us to "protect the intellectual property rights" and "copyright infringements" have been TRIED and CONVICTED and SENTENCED as the
biggest thieves out of all of us ...

As far as I'm concerned - if I put somebody's (or mine) music on one of my videos, I'm actually providing FREE ADVERTISING for them. I have bought
many tracks from iTunes because I heard them on someone's video. I do think it's right and proper to credit the artist in your video.
If I was making money from someone else's music....then I would expect to be chased down and prosecuted by the copyright owners.

Exactly, John ... I remember a guy trying to start a music label who used free advertising like THE INTERNET, non-DRM file sharing and (cheap)
downloads to promote the music - what was actually good became popular, and THEN the artists (and labels!) got paid ... and if companies wanted to use
the POPULAR music for advertising, then they got paid good.
Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...
