any good place in Delaware or nearby?

Hi guys. I am new to Kite sports and also new to this forum.

I originally had a plan to take a kite surfing lesson this summer and thought I might practice with a smaller kite before this summer. I was doing some research on the internet and got myself a Beamer TSR 3.6. Very good kite. Easy to fly and it generates good pulling power as well.

Now, I am thinking why wait when I can enjoy Kite landboarding? Next week, I am going to order a scrub ATB and I should be ready for Kite landboarding.

The thing is, I never seen anybody doing Kite landboarding around my place and am not sure where to go for that. I saw some posts here and there saying look for soccer fields but I am looking for bigger and wider place like dry lake bed (I know, there is no dry lake bed in the East coast but I meant something "like" that).

Does anybody in this forum do kite landboarding near where I live, Newark DE? Any Kite landboarding club in my area? Does anybod know any good place to do Kite Landboarding?

I would appreciate any input from you guys. Thanks.

Hi Brian and welcome aboard. I just got back into the sport myself this past winter so that I could play in the snow a bit. You're pretty close to a lot of hot spots for kitesurfing. As for landboarding I'm not so sure what's around you. I'm from maryland myself and like you mentioned tend to lean towards hitting soccer or football fields quite a bit myself or parks with decent open spaces. During the winter my uncle opened up his farm for me and some friends to hit up on our snowboards.

There is a yahoo group called maka that you may want to look up. Quite a few people on the forum kitesurf pretty much year round. A few here and there go landboarding, but not too much cept when there's snow then they're using their skiis and boards. Sandy beaches are decent to landboard on as well, however, with spring and summer coming along I would imagine it's going to get tougher trying to find an open beach.

Where were you thinking about taking your lessons? Have been wanting to do that myself..just not sure where I'm going to try it. Am headed out to Ca. in may and thought about doing it there, and if not possibly heading up to your neck of the woods, well Dewey or something to one of the schools there.

Thanks for your reply, Joe.

I am thinking about taking kite surfing lesson at Dewey beach. I have been doing internet search and that is the closest place for lessons. It is a bit pricy though. They said for two days, total 7 hours and charge $600. Two people max per lesson and that's a good thing so I can get some attention when I get pulled by a kite in the water helplessly :singing:

Where in Maryland? If it is not that far from me, I would like to join you guys for kite activties if you don't mind. It's always more fun to do something with others with same interest but so far, I haven't seen anybody flying kites around here, let alone kite landboarding. I have a Beamer TSR 3.6 and plan to get a ATB sometime next week. In the future (and after some pacticing), I would like to get a larger Crossfire and eventually Montana.

Shoot me an email if you are not that far from me (Newark, DE) and don't mind me joining your gang. leebrianh at hotmail dot com Thanks.

Brian,
I'm about an hour, maybe a little more then that, away from you. Live in Sykesville, Md. I haven't yet met any of the Maka crew...tried to hook up with them over the winter for some snowkiting but the one storm we had was too deep and wet for any good type of kiting. Am planning on heading out to meet the gang sometime soon though. Almost every sat. & sun. of late quite a few of the bunch have been going to a place called the terrapin located just on the other side of the bay bridge near stevensville, md. On occassion they've even been heading up to Dewey as well.

Have to agree with you about it always being more fun with others though..not to mention you usually tend to change the learning curve quite a bit to your advantage by getting pointers off of each other. Got a laugh at being pulled through the water helplessly...you should've seen me get dragged this past winter through the snow. Had a good size group of atleast 20 kids and parents laughing hysterically as I got pulled face down a good 50' through a foot of snow. I wasn't laughing, but the thought of it is kinda funny now.

Let me know when you get your board and we'll hook up if you're game. Plenty of soccer fields around here and I'm going to ask my uncle if I can hit his farm still or not. I think it kinda depends on what he has planted and where. Will let ya know.

Sounds good, Joe. I will PM or post here when I get my board.

I went to Dewey beach yesterday but the wind was too strong, I had to turn around. Last week when I went there, no wind and yesterday too much wind..... That seems always the case when I am dying to fly a kite

I have to find a good (soccer) field around my place. I went to a couple of parks but wind was changing constantly speed and direction wise. Maybe too many trees around, maybe me being not experienced (more likely).

Anyway, Keep in touch, Joe
