thats what you call proximity flying with an LEI

honestly i could never kitesoar with an LEI, i dont care what brand. It would have to be a Flysurfer or a Frenzy or somthing.

With all the people who gotten into gliding as of late, it has me wondering if there are any stress tests done to determine breakdown due to suspended load such as gliding. Thereust be such a test done on paragliding equipment. Be kinda interesting to see how much lifting a set of lines and bridles can take before the load has weakened them too much.

i was thinking the exact same thing, Lei are just too unpredictable. No matter what the brand. Dont get me wrong LEI is what i fly primarily. BUT One bad stitch in the leading edge... your F*ing toast coming off a ridge. Thats why i said only flysurfer soaring for me.

I think pascal is been with Gin from the start 2005 and before that with North ??? all his videos include gliding and all on LEI ... I have one of his kites he use for gliding and after closer inspection I could not tell that has been used at all..... just perfect .... bar and power line shows some usage but not much ,,,,, Some say that gliders replace lines every few sessions ....

my computer..

...does not play Vimeo videos well...pretty bad actually most of time. Audio works but film is just stop and start 'stills' with little bits of 'moving' picture(frames).

Will show little moving pics as normal... and then random still frames ahead , in between freezes. Probably not enough GB,MB, memory..?

Missed some good film again...curses Vimeo! :moon:

This video-which i hardly could see- makes me think of Zebulon Jakub's (Of IME ) ascent and then ski(kite packed away) down Mt Washington in NH in 58 minutes*.

*No it was not filmed...

Would love to use kite on mountain(up or across) instead of flats..My goal so far still a dream.

Here is related PKF thread from last season if you too dream of this kind of thing:CLICK HERE

Mind if I add to the glide...?

Kober, I know your interested and didn't know if you've seen this**?
-Based on your interest in the previous thread I linked you were part of....

This probably isn't the record 58 minute round trip but at least here's some Kite skiing of Zeb on my favorite playground-Mt Washington- 'up-skiing' w/ kite( you folks are calling this 'gliding'?). Just viewed this for first time. a few minute ago.

The increased power or pull needed to move you uphill with inertia at increased angle (as opposed to getting momentum on the flats) is interesting. Anyone have a math formula for this?:puzzled: Look out when you get back to the flats! Seems a wide range de-power excels in this type of use.

@skimtwashington... for a point of clarification, "gliding" is not what is being referred to on the ascent. Gliding is what is being referred to when the riders hit the top of the peak, turn the skis downhill and use the kite to jump off the trail / peak and glide to the bottom to begin the upward ascent again.

FWIW, Pascal was gliding off the same peaks on his Eskimo III before he moved to the Zulu and you can see that on his vimeo page - though he has taken it to the next level with the Zulus.

When the Vimeo page loads and starts to play, pause the Vimeo player and let it buffer. Once the whole video is loaded (you should be able to see the timeline as it buffers) it should play smoother.

No way! Norway? Know a way? Not far away. No? Okay. ...

...I want to go there!

I did and do pause the Vimeo videos when they act 'badly'...give it time to load ....and it still doesn't play right 50% of time...although this last Pascal video(2006 Norway) worked straight away w/no buffering.:puzzled: Go figure.

...but thanks Cheezy.

Outrageous video with stories-high lift and long airtime. I think how hurt or dead if you suddenly plummet.

Always wanted to visit Norway...originally for back country telemarking...it's home turf...

that's a great video....pretty much sets himself down on his own tracks at 5:50...amazing.

" it has me wondering if there are any stress tests done to determine breakdown due to suspended load such as gliding"

not sure that would be too much of an issue. The loads on the lines would be more than riding, but they would still be quite low in relation to the max load of the lines. I would think repeated larger loads (say, from big jumps) would be more of an issue for the line integrity.

Hi
Just stumbled across this topic/thread.
Yeah gliding is def. going down or maintaining a "neutral" height, relative to the hill.
On Mt.Washington, I have done some gliding above mount Sam Adams and on the West side of mount Washington..... But not huge 1:00 minute long glides..... More like 10-15 seconds tops! As after that my height was REALLY high and I was really scared!.... It is a very steep landing and b/c of ground drop... My height was in the 80-100 foot range in about 1 second.....and potentially rising fast!

Also, my time was 1 hour 48 minutes (approx.) from car to summit to car.... And many runs from car to summit to car under 3 hours...
Ummmm which by natural means (non motorized)is the fastest I've ever heard of, but I don't really care... Its about the experience. which has become The "Thrill and Skill", a kite course I offer to everyone in the world....specifically to kite up and down steep hills, safely, is very helpful in getting a grip and not launching/ thrashing in winds above treeline in NH....it does require that you are way beyond IKO Snowkite level 3n certification, and in fact you must log in time above treeline without kiting at all to get familiar with the terrain.
Out west is a little easier in certain spots as the terrain has more snow to potentially "crater" into.... Trust me, you will crater a few times learning to glide....hehehe... I remember one "crater" that was about 2-3 feet deep and my skis and goggles were truly spread around the impact hole my body made after coming into the landing early with a powerful kite loop....Chasta and Rob Whittal just laughed as I did not quite make the conclusion to my story in the air very clean in appearance.

Be safe!

Ohhh...my mistake.

Sorry Zeb...Not 58 minutes?....... but 1 hour and 48...still cool. May be an innaccurate relay from someone on TFT blog or I simply misread myself.

Love the Tomcat video.
When he takes off at 3:00 and just doesn't come down ..wow.:o He's really just parasailing at that point.

(My idea would have been to pack up kite and ski down)

multi image overlay at 4:51 is so nice.

Must have not so gusty and not too strong a wind to do this I assume.

I don't know how well more compact FB kites can work in these situations..but obviously not as well or as safe as depower.

The LEI's would seem to have additional advantages for snow/moisture and resisting collapse in it's structure(no bowties!).

Need more videos like this.
