Am I crazy or...

Do others do this when considering a relocation?

I'm a bit tired of SW FL. It's been a great 23 years here but it's coming time to find a new home. I have been considering Brunswick, GA for a couple of years now but lately a few other suggestions have been thrown into the mix. Whenever someone makes a suggestion, the first thing i ask myself is "hows the kite scene there?" I've had a few friends here in Naples ask why I want to move and the only answer I can provide them is, "The kiting here is terrible."

Am I crazy for wanting to move primarily based on kiting?

Guess it depends on where kiting falls on the priority totem pole of your life.

Might be easier to just assume you are crazy and go from there.

I once bicycled 20+ hours roundtrip to visit a bird and walked over 25 miles to see the motorcycle I eventually ended up buying.

Crazy is just a state of mind.

If you going to be a beach bum to do it you are crazy.
I had tons of hobbies but I committed myself to kiting about 2 years ago. I still have other hobbies but this is my main one. If I moved anywhere I would consider how it would affect kiting. As it is, here, kiteboarding is the best option but land kiting is so much easier for me.

Just make sure that your life won't be harder and leave less time for kiting when you moved to get better kiting.

I was considering Brunswick for a few reasons.

1. Kiting Jekyll regularly.
2. Lower cost of living.
3. Kiting Jekyll regularly.
4. Much more laid back lifestyle.
5. Kiting Jekyll regularly.
6. Not TOO cold in the winter.
7. Kiting Jekyll regularly.
8. My career is easily maintained there.

Did I mention kiting?

People here think I'm nuts but I don't know...Sounds logical to me.

I've just been lucky with my moves. Had the sodfarm in Cali along with a built in set of kite buddies. Then I got the holy grail of relocations for a kite buggier. :wow: I liken my move here to a surfer from Nebraska being asked by his company to move to the North Shore of Hawaii. I am in awe every time I drive onto Ivanpah at the smooth, hard surface that goes for miles and is protected by BLM for us to do our thing out there. Vegas/Henderson is a fantastic place to live as well. I bet lots of Toyotas get sold here. :bouncy:

BTW, Brunswick is at the top of retirement locations for us.

There are a few of us here who'd like to move TO Florida for the beaches and kiting. But Brunswick sounds ideal, too!

If there is nothing holding you too you current location. If you can sustain a healthy living. If you will be happier knowing that you'll get more out of your hobbies and less living like a couch potatoe. If you don't mind up rooting and leaving certain things behind. If you can answer yes to those questions, then you should do it. Life is too short to live somewhere you don't want to be. I grew up where I live my wife grew up on Vancouver Island. If I could still maintain my cost of living, and not have to travel away from my wife and kids to work, I would be on the Island already. Till my kids are grown up or I can find the right job, I have to stay where I am. But one day that will be a reality. Life live to the fullest, and be happy cause one day it will be all over.

P.S. Smile it's good for ya!!!

You're not crazy at all

I'm totally addicted and that mindset goes into every decision I would make regarding relocation....I've thought about buying a second home around the Charleston/Hilton Head Island area...it's all those damn posts and videos from Phree and Don ;-)

It's hard though when the family and relatives are all here and the wife loves socal...it's not really too bad if you don't mind the traffic and smog!

The only thing I think I would really miss would be the waves....Don, Phree...any waves out there?

I say do it!!!!

@BB One of my choices was the Vegas area but convincing Sheska to move to the desert has proven to be an excercise in futility  She likes green scenery entirely too much. After much debating, she gave in and said if it would make me happy to move there, shes in. Bad part is I know she wouldn't be 100% happy in the desert and her happiness means as much as kiting to me :)

Translation: I need more time to structure a new sales pitch ;-)

Most people have no idea of what desert living is like. We've encountered SO many misconceptions of others about how it is to live here. I grew up in much greener conditions (In Eastern TN) than either Georgia or Florida can offer and I love it here. Yes it's different, but different isn't necessarily bad. I recommend a long weekend visit here (not described as a sales pitch) and see more than between the MGM Grand and Stratosphere casinos.

The lack of humidity alone had me sold right away. Eating dinner outside at 95 degrees completely comfortable and with dry skin is a real treat. You'd be dripping wet in minutes back east.

Dude, I don't understand everything about what you're saying... but I relocated to Montana (very scary, charged by moose my first week in big sky) and it was worth my emotional investment 10,000%

An environment defines a man, therefore a man should define his environment.
I learned so much discipline in my first winter of -30 degrees; walking to the bar (so me and my roomate could pound shots and play go)

I think everyone should reinvest themselves in a place they dream of. Only then can ascend our rights into heaven itself.

BB, I plan to some day get out that way. It's difficult as I only get 1 week per year off and that is reserved for JIBE for the next 2 years at least. This year for the fun, next year for my wedding. After that, who knows. I've always wanted to see Vegas.

Drew, PEPPERS!!!!! LOL  I do have to admit, Brunswick does have a very "homey" feel. (not homie yo, homey)

WOAH! Just noticed ur new status Drew....you flew kites? I thought ur stake flew it? Hows that new "flippin" buggy?

if you keep thinking it, you are one step closer to doing exactly what you want.

live where you truly want to live and eventually going away on a vacation will seem like work. then you know you're in the right spot.

ONE week off a year??? Now THAT's crazy. Everytime I buy a new diary, the very first thing that goes in are the kiting events. Followed by low tide times. THEN customers and work commitments.

Let's face it, when you're lying on your deathbed (hopefully a LONG time away) will you be thinking "I wish I spent more time working" or "I wish I spent more time kiting..." ??

seize the day.
