Oh my goodness.... he/she's gorgeous.... radar (ears) love.

The yard patrol is currently large enough.

(Buggy)Danny helped me find a home for one of them last year.

Got two fosters to a no-kill shelter about 20 miles away about 2 weeks ago.... still trying to gather up the rest. Loooong process of gaining trust. They were both female neighter had been spayed by their previous "owners".

Kills me to play Judas goat, but better for the wee ones in the long run. Especially hard with one of them because she was extremely skittish when she first showed up and it took a long time for her to trust me. Eventually she would come bounding across two yards everytime I steped outside and she would follow me and Bridie around when I took Bride out.

Extremely small gray puff of fur but she cowed just about any other cat and is the only cat I have ever met that made a noise that was like a dog barking. Scared the bejeebers out of me the first time she did it. She didn't just think she was fierce.... she actually was. We fought racoons together. I miss her... a lot... more than I miss most humans.

Everyone's made it through the winter ok.... but you can tell which cats have been abandoned recently. They are either super friendly or freaked and skittish beyond belief. There's a feeder with kibble on the deck, heated water bowl too. There's at least two wet feedings a day.

The abandoned cat population has exploded. 6 million pet cats in the US (2009) and just as many abandoned and feral.

The newest to shift into the "ok....I kind of trust you aren't going to kill me" phase is The Mottle.

Absolutely gorgeous.... primarily grays, tans, and browns. Extremely muscular, built like a freight train, paws the size of a snow leopard, and ice blue eyes.

It's long drive to the shelter on backroads, so I get to hear them go through the 7 stages of capture and it absolutely wrecks me. We found an dead cat in our yard last year, so I guess that is part of what drives this.

What I would like to do to folks that abandon cats especially in the winter isn't suitable for a public forum.

ATB,
Sam

That serval is wicked looking for sure. Aren't they illegal in some states? I have a cousin that wanted one and ran into legality issues in GA. Still doesn't have one. We are all about mutts and rescues. And it IS cool to like cats.

@ stephdip - That is a beautiful bengal.

My cat of 13 years passed away last year but we were fortunate enough to be adopted by a crazy dilute, grey tortie at the humane society. Cat is way more dog than cat: talks all the time, lilkes her tummy rubbed, gives kisses to everybody, has never hissed, bit or scratched. Just the best personality a cat could have. But totally the curious cat (resulting in 2 emergency vet visits, one ultrasound, and one call to animal poison control). Love her but she's burned through 8 of her 9 lives in just over 12 months.

Steph, Bengals are sweet cats my mom had one years ago. It got out one night and a fisher cat got it :( very sad day for Mom. Then she saw one in the paper at a local dog pound. Add said it needs to go the dogs are all afraid of it!! So she called them right up and went over to ge it. When she got there it was not a Bengal. But it was a cool cat so she got it. The next day she took it to the vet to get it checked out. The vet was amazed and said it wad an Ossicat. I guess it's part Osselot and part main coon. What an amazing beast. The serval looks a lot like it. Wonderful cat. But be real carefull not to get it excited if it's sitting on you. Huge claws and teeth!!

I have debated adopting a savahhna, but all the people that have them for adoption want extreme $ for them. I want a rescue, not to buy your retired breeders...

Anyone know of true adoptionrescue places up here in the OR/WA area that specializes in any of these rare cats? (ossi, serval, savahna, etc)

the savanah cat is an F1 hybrid serval with no import issues and males are sterile and are still quite ANIMAL not a timid pet. not sure of the implication of access to an open public for such animal but $$$$$ keeps things small.

for an avid animal trainer /worker i'm sure its responsible for the most part ..but doubt of mans past that things have changed, carelessness will be unavoidably pervasive.
nice bengal

Man Sam if we didn't already have a handmedown cat and two new rescue additions I would be interested in that grey one in the the lower pictures. What a cool looking cat. But our poor "Jackwowa" Harlow would freak out if we bring another cat in the house. Plus it's tough with the three we have!!

We have the same problem.... two cats and a dog already. The Pookah would probably be OK with a new companion, but Duncan most certainly would not. The Pookah was rescued from a shelter and we get the feeling he didn't have the best previous home. He took about 6-12 months to decide I was "OK." Now he walks all over me when he wants attention and walks over and taps my elbow when it is feeding time and I am running late.

Duncan was rescued by the neighbor's kids from some other kids who were torturing him. They didn't tell their mom, and she didn't feel like they could provide a good home for him, but knew Mary was a sucker for a furry face. He's a handful all by himself. The siamese in him is very vocal and he will walk around the house at 3:00 in the morning screaming at the top of his lungs because no one is awake to play with him. He sits at the window and howls when the garbage men take away the garbage and recycling.

When's he's active, he literally bounces off the walls. When he's mellow, he curls up behind my knees and sleeps. If I haven't shaved he loves to rest on paw on my knee and waits until I lean down and holds my face with the other paw while he scratches his face with my stubble. When I am unavailable, he's happy to have Bridie, the Springer Spaniel give him a bath.

He's prone to massive bouts of seperation anxiety if one or both of us leave the house.... pretty sure the neighbor can hear his hysterics.

Pretty sure that Bridie assumes that cats are just smaller dogs and they all love her. Some like her, some tolerate her and others .... a tad less tolerant.

The Mottle is indeed gorgeous. More tans and browns than greys. Pretty sure the computer chip in my camera said "No way a cat could be that color.... let me fix that for you." The fur color and ice blue eyes are a pretty amazing combination. As far as we can tell, someone dumped/abandoned him fairly recently.

When he first showed up, he was all skittish and started hissing from about 20 feet out. Now he'll follow me or run across the yard to come see me and lets me pet him. Hoping to get him to the no-kill shelter soon if we can't find him a home. Not at the "OK, you can pick me up stage" yet... get the impression if he gets riled he could take an arm or a hand. Just not used to seeing such a muscular/buff cat.

Budget cuts have reduced the time that the ASPCA or animal control will foster a cat before they euthanize him/her around her, so even though the no-kill is farther away.... it still gets the nod.

Woke up this morning at around 4:30 or so and there were two pairs of eyes peering into the window (they were standing on top of each other on the porch railing), wondering where the he|| breakfast was. Apparently, we were slacking off.

Some (but not all) of the cats that have left paw prints on my heart can be found here (3rd post... not mobile device friendly).

ATB,
Sam

He wishes to indulge his hunger which you have fostered through this delightful thread... :singing:

Anyone ever watch Archer? There's an episode where he tries to pet an Osselot and gets all torn up, it's hilarious. Anyway, cats are cool...the one I have won't let anyone pet her but me, and that's only on her terms.

I assumed natural-selection (and breeders) weeded out non-pettable housecats quite a while ago!
You got a mutant there!
