Nice work Mark! I see it is a low spot. Is water artificially held there for some reason and thus a "plug" is pulled to start the draining drying
process?

It's a bit misleading even with the first photo that bowl isn't there, I think it's probably just a lot of compacted backfill on that land where it
holds surface water after winter until a good run of weather - but the locals will know better.

I believe they let the field flood with rainwater in the hopes that it might freeze thick enough to skate on. I don't think it happened this year. At
least there doesn't seem to be the collection of hockey nets, etc, that were left last year.
If there is not enough collected rain water they will add more from the fire hydrants. Even with the plug pulled, actually valve opened, rain water
will still collect in the lowest spot for a day or two during the summer after a heavy rain.
As it dries, the winter's collection of goose #@%$#!e, now a layer of slime covering the once flooded areas, will slowly dry as well. Until it does,
it will be pretty sloppy stinky slime. It does make for great sliding turns, but you want a change of clothes and something to cover your mouth,
yeech.
All of the Lulu Island is a low spot. It is really a just swamp where the Fraser meets the Sea. I don't think there is land in Richmond over 10'
feet above sea level that was not man made.

Mark has explained it pretty well.
GP is on a delta of seeded sand at the mouth of the Fraser river. We are displaced for 6 + months a year while they allow the middle of our field
flood. All for the hope of a few freezing days of skating.
I believe that we would use the field all year round and possibly deter the geese from pooping up the place. The soup that forms can't be good for the
kids ? But then again we all played in gray water as kids. Maybe their systems need the exposure?
The one good thing about it is the sand is hard for a while and great for Coyotes. Then the poop breaks down. :Ange09:
