My First Go at a Strop.... Testing at NABX 2012

This strop has 3 safeties. One by each handle and the red rip chord on the shackle......the strop is adjustable by moving the knot by the left handle.....it will be interesting to see if this thing really works at NABX next week......feedback welcomed.....and appreciated...... I did the mock up on the brake line loop of my HQ handles. My PL handles, which have loops on the power and break lines are parapacked with the Vipers and ready for NABX......

the only thing that would make it better, would be to trade that wichard QR for a 2673 torsion wichard !

just make sure that the strop can slide cleanly with NO SNAGS from one ond of the strop to the other... with absolutely no chance of getting stuck in that roller assembly...

i tried something similar to what you are trying, and it all seemed good until the strop got snagged in the spreader bar and the kite went into uncontrollable loops...

whatever you do, put it through its paces in very tame winds... you dont want to find the flaws when its blowin 30 mph... trust me when i tell you that that leaves a markl!

good point dylan..... those are safety release loops so hopefully the worst that would happen is the strop would release..... but it definitely bares some attention.... thanks.... I will def check that out.....

Two questions:

  1. Is the nylon webbing and velcro closure sewn to the dyneema/amsteel line or does it fall away once the safety is pulled?
  2. Does the metal lock pin travel through the pulley?

It is sewn to the dyneema...

If one of the handle safeties was pulled the metal pin would travel thru the pulley.

If I reversed how this attaches and gave up the adjustable strop and put in loops instead of knots this could be remedied.

Thanks for the observation Sam.....

Inverting the connection method and giving up the adjustability (not 100% convinced you would have to) would definitely seem preferable.

My concerns (if not clear from the line of questioning), especially if you pull the safety with the hand/strop side at extension is that it will have the lenth to the pulley and then away from you to accelerate. With no control of the orientation of the pull loop when it gets to the pulley, it's possible it might snag which would yank you. The other concern is that the metal bit while fairly low mass will still be moving fast enough to raise a well or worse on any exposed skin.

If it's not already apparent, I worship at the Temple of Murphy.

ATB,
Sam

I agree with Donnie, I don't like that style of wichard either. A side pull bail style is way easier to pop with pressure on it.

I told Goof that he would hear lots about the type release he got. I also told him I have had the same one for 3 years now and while I haven't used it a great deal, I've never had it fail to release. I've tried to bind it up in all different ways trying to find a way for it to not release. Barring having fine sand jammed in beside the pin, I don't see why it would jam, but the doubt continues. Just so I don't have to worry about it anymore, I just bought a proper wichard release but have to craft a release line to put it into play.

They don't carry them. I've drooled all over their rigging shelf. ;-) They don't know what amsteel is either.
