Peter Lynn synergy depower

Today I was ridding my 15 m synergy in about 15-17 knots on the water I reliesed I was getting too close to the edge of the water but not being use to being about to depowerToday and slow down the synergy just keeps pulling I tried turning up to slow down lol but went flying in the air crashing down on the sand the strings went slack kite fell down mid way right into the hot zone and I got slammed again. My question is there any way of depowering the kite so a safe level if needed of do I just need to be quick on the safe release next time?

you need a different bar probably - a"long throw" bar with a very long bar travel. so if you are in danger you can just release the bar and the kite is maximally depowered. no need to fiddle around with the adjuster traps..

I've got a bar enroute from "old school" on kiteforum to do exactly what herc is suggesting. Going to put it on my 10m Scorpion , when the winds are howling and we're trying to go fast there is not a whole lot of need to hog it in but lots of reasons to backoff.

Oh I just been reading a few more forums and found that if the kite goes slack and drifts back in the power zone best action is to just release safety and fully depower the kite would you say this is best action herc if I was close to the sand

And wanted to ask too your rear bridle setup do you leave it central or more towards the back-less power or towards the front-more power for most days

twojay, i think others can answer your questions regarding zero7 bar better, because i never had a zero7 bar. i always use my naish 2009 bar with my arc kites. this naish bar has a wonderfull long bar travel, as you can see in these videos, back lines are completely slack and the bar still has some range upwards.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qApvsgj_J3k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHd7koE2xEg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KebALd0l20

but i think it might be relatively easy to replace your existing grey depower rope (the one that runs trough the bar) with a longer (up to twice as long if you have a seat harness) tope.

or maybe try to catch a naish SLE bar from ebay for cheap ? it works perfect with arc kites, especially because of the very long bar travel.

regarding dangerous situations near the beach etc: always quick-release. no matter what. at least, imediately release the bar and grab to the quick release. if things relax, you can wait for the kite to recover , if things go bad, pull the quick release. but practice this sequence: 1. releasing bar, 2. putting hand on quick release. must work automatically in dangerous situations.
the same way like paraglider-pilots should repeatedly practice the grip to the release handle of the safety parachute. you might never need it, but if things go wrong it should work even if you are hanging entangled in lines, upside down in your harness.

Sounds like you redirected the kite overhead too fast and got lofted?

If the kite falls directly into the power zone it's going to power up, regardless of bar throw or the amount of trim. That is unless she's in tailstall or it's an SLE type inflato with 100% depow when the bar is out IMO. From what twojay described it's the same situation you would see if a kite hits a pocket of dead air, falls out of the sky and then gets back into the wind and powers up while you (the rider) are still in mid-crash.

Twojay what you read in the forums and what herc said is good advice. Just pop the safety. And practice it until it's second nature/muscle memory. Until you have a feel for the kite and know how to deal with it in that kind of situation it's better to be safe. When you get used to flying the Syn you'll find that you can actually recover from a slack line/kite in hot zone situation.

I'm a little suprised that the Syn 15m had you overpowed on water in 15-17kts. Even with the '07 bar she should have had plenty of depow between the trim and the bar throw. Are your internal setting on loose or do you have them all cranked up?

twojay... no offence, but im having trouble deciphering what you are asking.... i am pretty comfy w/ my 15 synergy and might be able to help....

depowering the kite to a safe level... at 15knots, a 15m synergy should not be overpowered... were you just out of control?... cause if you were, then you should slow down, especially if headed at the shoreline...
turning up to slow down?? you mean bringing the kite towards zenith?? ... cause thats how you jump...
rear bridle??? arcs have no bridle...
leave it central???... huh?
more towards the back??? i dont know what any of this means....

my suspicion is that you are very new, and perhaps didnt do much research before you took the plunge and tried on your own to learn, and may have been a little reckless in the process... forgive my assumption, but your language indicates that you are new to the sport and perhaps just dont know the terminology...

thats not a bad thing, but it does become a bad thing if you are out in conditions that you are unfamiliar with and playing with equipment that you do not know how to use...

again, forgive me if this is offensive and off base, but do you know what you are doing? ... because if you dont, you can easily hurt yourself and/or others...

i am self taught, too, so there is nothing wrong with that.... but you bet your butt that i took the time to learn the lingo and the equipment and took adequate precautions before attempting to kitesurf....

maybe take a little time to sort this stuff out... watch a few videos... read a book on the subject ....

again, not to quibble, but its hard to answer questions like this, because i dont know what youre talking about, and honestly, nobody has ever referenced arc kites in this manner, which might explain why you are getting vague answers....

from what i gather you got lofted? and then yarded when your kite powered up in the power zone (not hot zone)... always hit your quick release if it looks like your kite is going to inflate the powerzone and you are on land.... sounds like your lucky not to have hurt yourself....

PS... this post is not intented to offend anyone or anything like that.... i would consider myself partly at fault if i suspected inexperience and recklessness and didnt say anything... i would hope everybody in the kiting community would feel the same... an ounce of prevention.. yada yada yada

It's hard where I live because no one uses foil kites so no one has any idea about them most hasnt even seen one before ive been kite boarding since 2009 so sort of new I'm just unfamiliar with foils as used to my bow kite when it gets dangerours I just let go of the bar and it just looses all power as for the bridles I meant VPC will moving it to the back reduce the power of the kite much. LOL just found the center strap too thought it only had the 2 outside straps or steering adjusters I have loosened the flight adjuster completely now I might try tightening the steering adjusters I litte because it was flying like a truck the other day, had trouble trying to turn it all the time to get moving, anyone else find the 15 syn a bit slow or is it just the norm for a kite that size.

twojay: just experiment with all the settings on your synergy. regarding the VPC: just put the sliding knot in the middle for starters. later you can experiment where to place it. as far as i know, it mainly affects turning speed. but also a bit the bar pressure.

best initial settings for arc kites is almost always: completely loose straps inside the kite; VPC in the middle.

how wide is your bar ? larger kites need a wide bar - 60 cm or 65 cm is helpful for rapid turning.

with small bars with just 45 cm width jou cant turn bigger foils fast enough..

Herc's right, longer bars help.

I'd get used to her with the settings all loose and then try playing with them. You can get faster turn rates just by adjusting the VPC but then move to the shoulder (wingtip) adjustments later on.

The Syn is going to turn slower than your LEIs. That's one of the major difference between the Syn and it's replacement, the Charger. The Charger turns much faster but lacks the stability of the Syn.

It sounds like you're on your way to figuring it out and you're asking good questions so you'll get it dialed before too long:wee:
