The question I hate the most!

I got asked it again today when out on the land board.

" Are you practicing so you can go out on the water "

Then again, they could be commenting on my skill level ? :tumble:

That would be really annoying to get asked repeatedly. I guess the thought process is that if you are gonna fly a kite you obviously head to the water right away. Lots of guys that I've explained KGB to responded to me "what's the point, why not just go in the water??" really annoying.

Tell them the real truth...

It's ALL fun!

Then if you want to be smart, ask them,

"Are you practicing walking on the beach for any specific reason?"

I have better one ....
3 pollice cars surround me in local park ...... asking ....
" Did you just land here ??? "

After explaining what I do ...... they call headquarters and have higher rank officer come down to look at my "parachute"

It was more then an hour before they let me go ..... Someone call 911 saying that I land in park and have big (6m) parachute on the ground ....

If they don't believe it's a kite, always invite them to test the parachute or paraglider by jumping off the nearest hill with it. Can the police be charged with wasting the police's time?

You guys are hilarious. But yeah for riding on the water, one of the appeals is so that I can learn jumps and tricks with less fear of getting hurt than if I were to practice them on land. Of course there are other risks in the water, but I look at it like using a very big foam pit. I think no matter how big the sport gets we will still run into clueless, or curious people who won't take the time to observe before asking questions that might be answered if they did. I can talk kites all day long given the chance however; when you don't get to have a session that often sometimes you wish people would let you get on with it.

I've never been asked the kite surfing question,... of course I'm a minimum of 4 hours from the ocean, but still...

I get people asking what the buggy is, and I tell them it's like kite surfing but on land and you get to sit down. :D:spin::D

I get asked if I could do that on water lol

One good thing about nebraska I suppose... No one really cares enough to get out of their cars and talk to me... Too lazy... Scottsbluff if very fat (seriously look it up)

The only comments I get are from soccer coaches threatening to call the cops... "this aint a kite park, its a soccer field!!" I politely point to the fenced in soccer field (which I dont fly on) and say "thats the soccer field, this is a public city park." I then try to wave at one of the city guys I know.... Lol when they wave back, and call me by name, the soccer guy usually leaves

I get asked the motor question a lot about my buggy. Someone once said, "So is it electric or gas powered?" I always wonder, if I had a motor on this , why would I have a giant kite in the air?
It is pretty cool that I can be zipping back and forth at 40 mph with just wind power, I guess it is hard for some people to believe when they first see it.

My truck adorns a few Ozone/Peter Lynn stickers and not once in the few years I've been flying has anybody ever had a clue as to what they meant. When I explain things to them about the sport they automatically think that I kite surf at the beach. Almost everyone is suprised about all the other forms of traction kiting that can be done. I'm very suprised at how many people around here live under a rock.

pretty standard comments around here for landboarding...from, that's awesome (or some derivative), to ..... I've seen that on water but never on land, and the final comment, how can i get into this? i used to get a lot more people coming up and asking questions, not much anymore though...lol, I've seem to developed the secret art of letting people watch without having them come up and ask questions. :ninja:

Mood: Tied between the roots of Earth and the sky...

I've never done it on water before, its just an inconvenience. Although it looks mega fun… in no way would landboarding be "practicing" for kitesurfing… the risk factor alone for getting seriously hurt is enough to show that… not a single session has gone by where I went hard and didn't come home busted, bleeding and bruised. Boosting on the 16M Scorpion in rocky central Texas winds, often being carried much higher than I intended, is just what I'm used to flying in. My kites have never seen a steady breeze and my knees and back have never seen a soft landing. Not to mention, the flying techniques used for land kiting are different from those used on water.

It's funny to laugh at people's comments out of ignorance, such as inquiring about parachutes, the motors on buggies, etc. etc. But when some jerk takes a stab at you intentionally, and it doesn't even make SENSE… that'd make me a bit angry… but what do I have to worry about. I may as well have been beamed down from the mothership when people around here see me flying these here parachute devices.

Yes, my park is right on a popular seawall walk. Kitesurfers are out on the water in the off season. They DO go much bigger than I do , so the comments are not completely out of place.

I have sort of lost the desire to talk to everybody about our sport. Fortunately there are often Paragliders stuck kiting their rigs that get to answer for me ! Talk about confusion. Poor paraglider have to explain themselves + me ! ;-)
