Redirecting your big Phanny ?

I am just getting my 1st sessions in jumping with my 18m Phanny.

The park I ride in is tiny so it is difficult to build up speed. I have been struggling with the redirect . Not enough airtime to bring it back around. I have defaulted to doing transiton jumps since there isn't a lot of room to run out in the same direction anyway. The move fits the park but I still want / need to ride out in the same direction in other locations.

I had this same issue with my 13m Phsycho + 9m Blade. My 15m Syn was the 1st big kite I found fast enough to bring back around.

What is it I am missing ? Simply not getting enough speed going in and not enough airtime ? Or is there a way to bring large kites around faster ? :puzzled:

Having a small field is a killer. You really gotta crank that bar hard. It'll wear you out. I sometimes have that problem because my local spot is so bumpy. I think sometimes its easier for short runs if you can find a smooth patch. Trying to get the kite around for float is a lot of work. A little bit more wind outta the comfort zone will help with redirect but if kite leans back into powerzone you'll get scudded downwind. And with the small field I understand you are trying to stay in control. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

You are awesome ken, you'll find the sweetspot!

I am not sure I know what you mean by flying on the landing rings ? I am using the large 07 bar.

I think he is referring to bypassing the bar and reaching up and steering the kite using the o#@%$#! handles.

go old school... with a 32" bar :shocked2:

on the 07 your bar will have metal rings which the safety attaches to. Reach up and grab one to turn the kite faster than the bar; or use a bigger bar. these big kites are big boats and really just don't turn fast.

... and with that, the circle is complete.

Your comments Ken put us right back to the days when the original Phantom was out. Kiteboarding was in the early years of was taking off so most of what we wanted in performance was for water use (and winter and also just starting to realize we could use these bigger de-powerable kites in a buggy). So all of discussion and feedback was "we need faster, we need more power". That's why we moved on through every generation of arc after but kept the Phantom as our rock steady buggy kite.

Sounds exactly like the old days asking how to get the big kites to turn faster and wanting new designs.

try sending the kite further back before you pull the bar in. you will go more up then down wind which should give you abit more time to crank the bar for the redirect.

Speaking of big Phannies what does the 22M (or is it 24) PII turn speed compare to?

I flew it in light winds of course but it was actually similar to a 19m venom. Maybe faster. I was impressed with the turning speed and the power it created.

I actually got a chance to fly the 24 P2 this weekend, I was surprised with it's ability to turn at the rate it did for being so much kite. I am not sure what I would compare it to, except maybe the 18 on a light wind day.

As far as redirecting the Phanny 18 in a smaller area, I do like Adam said, and really crank on that bar. literally straight up and down to make that thing twist up and go the other way quickly!
