wind meter?

Any thoughts good or bad on a Kestrel wind meter? I am looking at the 2000 model but cannot make up my mind on what options to get. Thanks

I got one of these awhile back. Very small, fits in pocket and is submersible for water temp & wind chill which make it nice for water based kite/sailing sports too. Also, it's very well made not cheapo construction but then again anything Kestrel is going to be good...

Don't spend too much. Wind meters are over rated. I can't remember when I last had mine out. YEARS ago! I find the wind up 20m above me is almost always different than what I read on the ground.

I would far prefer to fly a spinner than to have a wind meter with me!

If you want a geek toy to enjoy get a GPS!

Once you get your senses calibrated to the wind, you'll discover that you won't need the wind meter anymore. I rarely find myself off by more than a knot or two on the off chance that I happen to remember to bring it along and actually use it.

I was thinking about getting one to help on my long-range shooting and for use with the kite for here and at the coast while on vacation.

They are nice to have. I am just suggesting that spending a lot on one for kiting isn't necesary . For long range shooting it may be more important.

Good point. As my screen name suggests, I am a shooter too!
Good discussion, and I agree there's no point in spending a bunch of coin on a wind meter but I do use mine when I travel for water sports and it is helpful for kiting inland with FB kites so you know what kind of gusts you may be up against.

This is a well made meter and not much $. I use it more for work than kiting.

forget the GPS; a GoPro is as close to a funometer as you can get.
