Cello ?

Was doing some research for a friend who has just bought a cello. I've never really looked into cello before.....just thought they were background strings in an orchestra or occasionally used for soundtracks in thing's like Jet Lee's 'Hero'.

Then I started looking on youtube....I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I saw this....along with many other incredible musicians and their cellos.

What a strange notion :o Never really thought of any instruments as purely destined for background duty.

Pretty sure the fine print on the Statue of Liberty also has the verbiage:

"Give me your marimba, your hang (pronounced "hung") drum, your PVC yearning for a solo. "

And so it came to pass....

And of course, there are some instruments that can simply never be pushed to the background.

Sam

hmmmmm.....yes, I can see the 'background instrument' comment could well be insulting.... I think that's just my limited exposure to music outside of my preferred genres showing. Or maybe my fairly narrow musical tastes. Either way, sitting down and belting out a tune on a Cello was something I had never considered.

Then again, I really hated violin and accordion.....until I heard 'Riverdance' Then it was a sort of 'wow, you can do THAT on accordion?'

So if I've insulted any cello player....just get over it !

I am a huge cello fan! Yo-Yo Ma is by far the best I have seen... also check out Apocalyptica, these guys opened for Metallica many years ago and I have been a fan ever since. Be sure to watch it all the way through… they get rock’en!

You need to rent/watch the foreign film called, "Departures" about a celloist who loses his job and moves back home.

It's one of my favorite movies of all time. The music is breathtaking.

Lost my virginity to a student of the cello . I've had a passion for JS Bach and Baroque chamber music ever since.

When you're hard of hearing (like me), reading subtitles/captions is second nature.

Viewing foreign films is a great way to experience another culture.

Many Americans are surprised to discover that great movies are made not just in Hollywood.

I have never once understood why people refuse subtitles. The film loses almost all of its meaning when you dub over w/ English voices. The inflection, the feeling of being in that moment, that is all in the actor/actress' voice, not in some guy who is sitting on a chair breathing into a sock.

However, I am finding myself skipping movies almost all together and sticking with the book. Hollywood needs to take their time and split movies into two if they cannot accomplish what needs to be done in 2.5-3 hours. Harry Potter was a good example of making it ok to make two movies from one book. LOTR is a good example of when they should have split the movies into 6 not three.
