Hello, I am new to the forum and a novice ATB. I live in Chicago and have been learning to ATB in the grass fields in the burbs. I am 180 lbs and have been using a Scout 2 3M & Scout 2 5 M to learn on. I eventually want to get off the ground in 10 to 15 mph wind with smooth lift and landing. I saw Windzup has a 10m Ozone Access for sale, would this be a good kite to add as I progress? Thanks for any feedback! -David

would recommend 12m for your wind conditions and size. Access 10 is a great kite, just a little less kite than you are looking for.

The ranger12 for sale in the sale section is a great beginner/intermediate kite, indeed, it's what I progressed on(not the seller, just have the same kite). That said, I think a frenzy 12m or a inflatable SLE kite would be a better choice, the ranger is a little slow for a 12 in my opinion.

+1 ranger is a nice choice.

If you really want to jump I'd recommend you not buy the Access. They are great kites; super smooth and friendly and they do have some lift but they are not what would be considered a lifty kite (at least not in the same category as a Ranger, Montana, Frenzy, Sherpa or other open cell "lifty" depowers). Now if the winds are super lumpy and never clean I'd lean more towards the Access / Apex and take smooth power and some lift over massive lift but unstable.

The 10m Access is ok for small jumps and is actually quite floaty on the way down. It does not have a lot of inherant lift though so you have to be aggressive and build up alot of line tension. not great 10 -12 mph but gets going into the teens

My 13m Venom is great for jumping good lift, good stability, reasonable float for smooth landings but its best 15mph or over.

The 12m Cult is amazing for jumps. plenty of lift and and float. smooth drift while in the air.

The best kite I have for jumping by far is my antique 14m X3 which is an old school performance C kite. Just load some even weight behind your heels and then sheet in to take off!! Unfortunately you also take off by accident if there is a big gust...

If you want smooth floaty jumps get a C kite. Slingshot Fuel, Airush Razor or Naish Torch all have close to old school performance with good safety and depower.

If you go for foils then i would get something big if you want to jump at the low end of your 10-15mph wind range. 12m open cell, 15-16 arc. I have yet to try a flysurfer so can't comment on them

Thank you guys, for all the great feedback. This gives me some new kites and ideas to research, which has been half the fun getting into this sport. I've read posts where guys buy a kite only to dump it shortly after because it didn't work for what they needed. Thanks for the advice, have a great weekend!

Ok besides the board/ kite combo that you choose,
really......smooth lift and landing can be done with ANY kite appropriate for the wind, terrain, and skill of the rider.

Back in the day people were jumping using kites that now, a modern kiter would flail with,..yet they, back then could do it,

If you can get a 10m kite inexpensively, DO IT! that is a great kite to work with however I would focus on the day's conditions more then the kite size, then after the day had been sized up, focus on the kite size, then YOUR skill level.

often a smaller kite flown like it is underpowered will result in good air as well as soft landings, but this "soft" talk, is really up to your ability to fly the kite in a manner that gets you in the air and lands you on the ground safely and smoothly!

In a recent lesson, I was using a 2.5 m three line trainer to demonstrate 360 backroll kite loops....
No kite company will advertise to you that there trainer kite will bring to you great jumping, but if the wind is working for the weight that you have and you know what your doing,...GAME ON!
