See I bet there is a few of these scientists who have a hate on for kiting. First thing I wonder is how much these people got paid to conclude their theory. My 5 year old could come the same conclusion that a swooping kite might scare an animal. Second just how large of impact do they feel this "New Crazy" is gonna affect the population? If a group were setting up and heading straight in a heard causing a large panic on repeated occasions then its understandable. That article was quite biased with not so much knowledge on the subject. I guess next they will start saying that our kites are gonna have a huge impact on the mosquito population.

Shaggs do you think it might effect them poor Skeeters? You know it may cause them to swarm and start attacking people and biting them and in turn spread diseases

I remember seeing a video, I think it might have been on kiteforum, I think by user flyvan. He encountered a herd of reindeer on the way to his kite spot. They were blocking the road, and didn't seem too concerned about the car trying to get by, so I can't imagine them being bothered by a kite!

In my limited experience, wild animals in the snow are way more freaked out by a loud-as-heck snomobile than a kiter who just glides by.

We all know they are just trying to keep kiters out of the troll territories... only a matter of time until someone gets eaten.

Well I think the big concern is the mysterious snow mosquito that gets unsuspecting snowboarders and skiers just trying to have a good time.

It's sad that Lucky is having his own video used against him. I'm sure he didn't give permission for them to use that.

We run into deer herds all the time here. They rarely take much notice of us and they sure as heck don't run extra far because they can still see our kites. Either our deer are really smart or reindeer are really dumb. My concern with local wildlife has always been about the eagles but the eagles don't seem to pay any attention anymore.

So ...... the 1st thing I see in that video is a few of dog sled teams. Have you ever HEARD a dog sled team going strong in the alpine ! You can hear it LONG before you can see them. I have a feeling reindeer don't hang around dog sled teams ? ( thanks for the experience Canuck )

Reindeer are smart animals. They find there way to your house each Christmas eve ! They would see that snowkiters are passing through . Gone by dark for sure. Even if they moved when kites are around I'm sure they know they are alone 95% of the time.

Animals can co-exist !


When my workmate told me about this issue He was saying that the study said. Larger numbers of downhill skiers have less effect on the reindeer than we do. I wonder even about that. Folks take over a ski hill and stay. We pass through. ???

The only animal that I have EVER seen have a problem with kites or kiteboarders is people's dogs.

I must say. It sounds like politics trying to ruin our sport yet again. I don't see why they insist on selecting the sports that are not popular and leave the morning popular sports alone. If more people do the sport usually more area is effected. Like the snowmobiles way more people do it and they cover a huge area compared to the handful of people that actually kiteboard.

I am not inside the Norwiegen head but in parts of Canada a Snowmobile is looked at as your " primary form of transportation " . Kind of like banning vehicles in farming areas because they kill deer to us farther south?

But try and fly a kite in all of those same places and wait for the guff !!!!!:ticking:

Mighty mites football league........... that's why I might be losing my kite spot. I just drove by there yesterday and saw a huge set of bleachers plopped right down in the center of my kite field. I'm so bummed about it. I found a really awesome spot by the lake today, its a huge grass field with a large open area for wind to come off of the lake. the only problem is that you are not allowed to kiteboard or windsurf on the lake because that is where city utilities processes our drinking water from. I'm currently in the process of talking to them and letting them know that I am a physics teacher and I have a kite club and trying to get permission to do "land kiting" on the grass area. I'm trying not to use the word kite boarding or kite landboarding to get away from the negative connotation to many board sports. Its a large animal refuge with lots of bird houses in the area so I don't know what my chances are. As I am trying to do this I am also trying to go under the radar unnoticed so they don't try and ban me from kiting in the area all together.

who knew that finding a place to play outside was so much work and so stressful

We hunt deer in the south........are reindeer part of the food table over there? If they are then kite out with your rifle and bring back supper..........

more important issues facing the world these days........

I'm thinking about getting a blokart just so I don't have as many restrictions to deal with. One problem is the price tag though.
