Who the heck ever heard of a "Flatcoated Retriever"?
So we found a dog last season. He'd been hit pretty bad by a car and we found him and took him to the hospital. After he had some surgery we offered
to foster him while he recovered so he wouldn't have to recover on a slab at the shelter.
Well after 3 months with a dog it's kinda hard to give him up. Especially when the dog you already have likes him so much. So we adopted him.
He looked like a Newfie. He acts like a Newfie. He was really skinny when we found him but assumed he was under weight. He had worms at the time so
it made sense. Now hes worm free, healed up and weighs in at 79lbs. Still a bag of bones.
Looks like a NEwfie bred with an Irish setter.
Just found out that he is NOT a newfie, but a Flatcoat Retriever. A Whaaaa???? Been around dogs all my life, know a bit about the different working
and sporting breeds, never heard of a Flatcoat. Anyone else?

As opposed to satin or semi-gloss coat retrievers?
I'm with you, been around and have owned hunting dogs (black, brown & yellow labs, golden ret. and a couple German shorthairs) my whole life and
never heard of this breed. I'm going to look/ask more about them today, if I find out something I will let you know. Either way....in the long run
you will have saved a dog (NICE) and now have an additional family member to love. Plus your other dog now has a new buddy to hang with.
Are you going to Wildwood?

Well, it's a breed. I probably have pet or seen this breed and just assumed that it was one of the breeds that I mentioned owning. Looks like a long
haired lab. (hence its name....flatcoat). Cool looking dog.

Funny thing is, now that we have this one our other dog, the pit/border collie mix AKA Borderbull, has bulked up since getting the Flatcoat. He was
89lbs when we weighed him at the vet last and he's bigger now. They goe nuts on each other when they play! The Flatcoat is fast on the straights,
has a long reach and uses his hieght to leverage against the other one. The other has low center of gravity, better cornering and hits like a
linebacker.
Before we got the Flatcoat he weighed about 78lbs. Now his freakin legs are huge and he looks more like a wild boar than a dog.:o
But yup, flatcoats are apparently an actual breed, kinda rare too. Only way to find one around here is to cruis the major highways at night and find
one hit in the middle of the road? :dunno:

I think they look more like a black golden retriever, than a long haired lab.

If it is anything like a curly coated retriever it will be an awesome dog.
