Sorry if this has been discussed and I missed it but it came up in conversation this week. The latest issue of the AKA kiting magazine has an article about Kiting being prohibited because of the plovers and also discusses a number of other things with the beach at Wildwood. Is that kiting ban only for certain times of the year? I'll attach copies of the article that were sent to me if you are interested.

It's not enforced off season ,just like the parking meters!

FWIW: If anyone's got a bad case of insomnia or a surplus of coffee, Phil Broder recently posted the often cited and now borderline infamous "Plover Document" on the AKA website.

Apparently, it's actually fairly hard to get a hold of if you are not a member of the academic community. My local library kept me hanging for over a month when I tried to obtain it through an inter-library loan. Luckily, Phil was able to tap a teacher friend to obtain a copy.

Often when it is "cited" by town officials, it's a case of heresay and they have never seen the actual document.

Although the sign states that it is Wildwood Crest that prohibits kite flying and kite buggying, I also have a Permit from Wildwood Crest Borough allowing us to hold our buggy event and they approved our request with no problems once I produced the appropriate insurance documents. We go there in the off season so there are usually only a small amount of people at the beach. They also have this same sign on the beach at North Wildwood Beach. (there are a total of three boroughs in WW and all share the same beach line, but call it theirs) We have not had any problems regarding being able to fly the kites and ride our buggies, only rule is no flying at night for safety reasons. We do still occasionally put up a kite at night with some glow sticks and fly static., Most of the time the local police stop to watch us for a while when they are on their shifts. We also have a lot of friends in the local government and tourism groups and Once special WW police officer. This helps alot!

I can appreciate the bird lovers trying to save the plovers, but they are long gone when we come into town!

thanks for the replies, one guy called to say it would be a shame to do the 11hr drive to find he couldn't buggy and I said I was sure it was all okay.

too bad about no doing any night buggying - It is one of my fondest memories and best buggy sessions at a Buggy Bash (probably late 90s) and a bunch of us out riding with a low tide, bright moon - just the whistling of kite line and gentle hiss of tires on wet sand. You'd see the light of a buggy in the distance coming the other way and then a soft whoosh as they passed and off into the darkness. That was probably the first time I rode with people like Paul and Glen ( and many others) and friends ever since.

There are some plans afoot here in Ontario - not confirming anything yet, just saying some last minute plans are afoot for a possible small invasion ...

The Piping Plover protection is only during the nesting season. They do the same thing in Brigantine closing the area to vehicular
traffic,usually late spring to Labor Day. One of the local blokart sailors was told a blokart sail would disturb the nesting birds.
I had the city officials out when I was blokart sailing last week and they gave it there blessing during the off season. Brigantine also allows kite surfing during the summer.
They want me to organize a event there.
