May be in a bad period, but this is the worst I 've ever senn- multifold. ..getting out of control even. I know our administrator isn't on all the time..so it's building up ridiculous amounts right now.

This bad period may be quite temporary and go away... or it may continue. I'm thinking the former so not to despair.

Yes...we can all bypass these posts...just a bit annoying. We just rather not have our fun site 'soiled'.

If it's really bothering folks a new system can be implimented to doulblecheck new registrants.

I would not make a double check system to be able to be a member on the site. Making it harder to become a member only discourages new members from joining. I think some members should be given the ability to delete a spammers posts and ban them from posting till the webmaster deletes them. It's pretty bad when 9 out of the 12 of your unread threads are spam. Some of the spammers keep posting new things later because no one is stopping them. I would gladly give up some of my time to to delete their posts and ban them so the site is more enjoyable for everyone else.

I'm with Skim- Look at how many posts are spam right now! I'm raising the level to a Def-Con 9!!!! If i could do something I would do it but I just have to sit here and watch the #@%$#! pile get deeper.

We can stop this and we are all offering help!

Ok I hate this SPAM!!!

But I think the points raised already are valid.

1. I don't like the idea of new member validation. This is a free and open community as long as people are respectful. (People who flame or troll should be booted as this is NOT kiteforum or the likes...)

2. More people should have some moderation abilities as leaving spam posts up for more than a few hours just lets the spammers win. (I know I check the new posts a couple times a day and see through spam posts right away.)

I'm on this forum daily...Either logged in or just looking....I also write to some nubes or talk kites/projects via U2U....I would be happy to have someone give me a little authority to get rid of the spam or manage it somehow for the PKF ....

I would also be willing to just drive to spammers door with kite stake and stop it permanently! :evil:

But how bout Def Con 1...?

I don't know a viable solution tbh, but this forum does have more spam than any other I've been on before ! (and i'm a nerd, I've been on quite a few of forums!)

Not sure I dropped Bob an email with a snapshot of the SPAM activity.

Eventually, the ship will right itself.

Until then, although it's frustrating, it would probably be best to not even bother posting to the the SPAM threads... as that just pushes them back to the top. Normally, it's ok when you are letting people know it's been reported as spam, but it's martial law now and pretty much a moot point.

Instead.... if you would like to crank the Signal-To-Noise ratio back up..... post stuff.


1. Add your thoughts to existing threads.
   
2. Post cogent kite questions (there's a nice tongue twister).
   
3. Wacky photos? We'll take them.
   
4. Break out the candles and Ouija boards and try to get members who haven't posted in a while to post... Baluk? Maven454?
   
5. Dog/Cat videos/photos always appreciated.
   
6. Remember any post that isn't SPAM.... well... isn't. OK, that wasn't exactly rocket science.

The last forum I joined required the first post be verified by a mod - seems like a good idea... any forum that doesn't have that system seems to get mugged repeatedly

I seem to remember extremekites requiring the first 5 posts to be screen - wonder how it's working for them?

One of the nicer features on another forum I frequent:

Down-vote Thread: Threads that recieve a total of 10 down-votes within a 24-hour time period will automatically get Moderated.

Basically any spam not caught by moderators is open to attack by the villagers with torches and pitch forks.

I am a moderator(1 of 5) on a boating site & have the ability to delete a post because of spam which there is little if any or because a person does not follow the simple rules.
The bigger the site gets the administrator needs help & he will know who the trusted people should be if he appoints moderators.

I'm noticing that it seems to come in waves,... Usually it's minimal, 1 or 2 every now and then every couple of months it comes in like crazy...

Maybe they have some sort of network where they share web locales that they got easy access.

Or maybe there's some sort of Internet Spammer forum we can go on and talk about kites just to irritate them
