Kite jumping

Hi I have been kiting for some time now and I am trying to learn to pendulum jump. I can jump using a pit and get five feet of air but I just can't pendulum jump. Any help is appreciated.

Run and fly with the kite at 10 or 2:00 (as if you were boarding or surfing). Keep running left (for example) and at the same time turn a little away / up wind of the kite (like you are edging) while you send the kite back fast and hard to 2:00. Once you feel the lift jump with it and redirect the kite back to 12:00 until you land.

If you aren't getting air you aren't redirecting the kite fast and hard enough away from you or you aren't directing it far enough behind you.

What type of kite are you using?

Neither of those kites are amazing for static jumping, but if you add an ATB to the mix, that frenzy can get you up there!

If you're like me, you probably aren't keeping the lines taut enough while you're running back into the wind. Probably need more rear line input as you move from 11:00 to 1:00 (or 10:00 to 2:00, if you're high enough in the window).

Once you keep the lines tight, you don't really need to jump very high. The kite does the work.

Both of those kites are small . Too small for jumping IMHO.

If a 6.6 blade or 6m Bego are old school model FB kites for jumping then I'd say a 7.3 DP is plenty big. I can jump well on my 6m Yeti and I've seen Lolo do some impressive jumping on a 6m Pulse 2. There is plenty of canopy in a 7.3 for float but you will need to fly it in more moderate winds which may not be as smooth.

That being said though, I agree with erratic winds in stating that DP kites aren't the best for static jumping as they don't really come alive until you get them in motion.

If Lolo was jumping on a 6m Pulse I am guessing the wind was so strong that YoYo would be afraid to put a kite up ?

Jumping in motion is different This guy is talking static. I do the odd jump with my 7m Pulse but I don't expect great float and rarely get it.

So far I have found the best static jumping kite is the Blade VIP. 8.5m of wholesome jumping goodness! It is a beast of a kite so as with ANY kite, excercise extreme caution! I don't recommend static jumping but if you insist, go big with kite size. Mmmmm, floaty...

Ok ...something confusing here...what EXACTLY does static jumping mean? Is it when one puts kite at zenith, doesnt move an inch and gets lifted or is it when one does the running upwind manouvre while moving kite 10 to 1 and redirecting? Scratching me head now. I think i'm misunderstand someth
ing here.

One of the best visuals I've ever seen for a static pendulum jump: https://sites.google.com/site/chrismwhittaker/pendulumjump

I'm too inland to consider jumping much, and subsequently I have nothing useful to tell you on how or technique. I have found it easier to do on a board, no matter water, land or snow.

Static jumping is just jumping on foot, not on a board or buggy. Static jumping is harder to get much height. If you are on a board moving at speed, and you pendulum the kite you will get air really easily. While static, you need more wind. Pendulum jumping can be done easily just by sending the kite over your head from left to right or right to left on a fixed bridle kite. On a depower it is almost the same, but when the kite gets directly overhead at 12 oclock you pull the bar in to go up. Once you get to nearly the top of your jump you ease the bar back out to keep from stalling the kite, and you only pull the bar in again as you are landing to land gently.

Here is a fun video my sister made of me flying my 8.6m Reactor at Myrtle Beach with my family last year.

Drewculous was my "tutor". If he still frequents the forum, he may be able to throw down some tips. His technique proved quite useful to me. Kite jumping is definitely one of the higher risk activities associated with power kiting, so please expect the unexpected if you're not kiting in smooth coastal wind. The technique that B-Roc described is pretty much it - the timing of the jump and re-directs is the hardest part.
