3D Printers

This bunch seems like there would be a few "printers" on this board. Im just starting to look at it all.... but the idea of self replicating printers is awesome

looking at the reprap printers, but i kinda wanted a larger print area than the "intro" printers offer.

Any experience here? any spare parts? any first hand advice?

Reprap project

Eventual goal would be like a 2'x2'x1' print area, so if i needed i could make some sizeable pieces! But thats a gnarly setup, prolly wont build one that size for a long time lol

I've wanted to attempt my own for a while now. Actually I think I posted about it last year sometime, but it seemed that nobody was doing it then. The biggest hurdle I currently face is three little ones that would think any part of the project would be great for their lego collection. That and my wife wouldn't let me build it in the house, and have no other place atm. :puzzled:

The problem with most all 3d printers is that the parts produced are not useable for much of anything other than toys.

Yup, toys is all they are good for.

Looks fun. (The white part is 3d printed.)

Well, I've also heard news not long ago that some students (MIT?) made real rifles by using the 3D printer...guns are toys too I guess :P

Here's a 3D pen people are trying to market: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVT6xdRWIQ8

I think that 3D printing is going to transform our way of life. Think 10 years from now and what will be possible. What happens when you can create anything even things with moving parts in your home. How about printing out that hard to find expensive part for you car? Want a disk wheel for your buggy or a machine gun? Download the specs and do it. Sure it's building with plastic but materials science can make plastic about as strong as steel or as flexible as rubber.

How do you protect intellectual property rights and product ownership? Will we see lock downs on sharing product designs like we have on music and videos? That's my rant for today.

I love Nahant but rarely get there anymore.

The "ar guy" is using a pretty sweet rig! Its a little pricier than what im eyeballin. The "cured resin" style of printers make awesome products thats can actually be used.... The hot tip printers are still pretty, well, not-quite-useless... But they make an inferior product in comparison...

Still weighing the pros/cons
