OT: Any Eggers here?

It's getting close!

We had to sell the old Barbecue (aka outdoor kitchen) with our last house because it just wouldn't fit in the new yard very well. After a couple months of research I've abandoned propane and natural gas and am going purist with a Big Green Egg! I can't wait!

Need to adjust the deck this weekend (we're extending it) and then the Egg will come home. Any eggers on here? Looking for must-try ribs, rubs and roasts. One of the wife's co-workers has one and invited us for a sampling. Butterfly chicken so moist it seemed like if you squished it it'd flow chicken soup!

abkayak - I think the beauty of them for the long smokes is that the temps hold crazy stable. You can set it low for a 12, 16, 20 hour cook and forget it. It burns so efficiently you can do this with one load of charcoal! Heat it up, toss in the meat and go kite....for hours and hours and hours ; )

I'll be sure to let you know how that plan works!

for recipes of all kinds check out
www.amazingribs.com

there is a forum for big green egg heads, but there is also
www.kamadoguru.com

we had to replace our gas grill a month ago. I'd looked at the big green egg previously. It is most certainly overpriced. If I had the money for a Big Green Egg I'd go for the Primo XL instead, the shape makes it a bit more versatile than the BGE.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2qxYIdABMI

When I saw the vision kamado at canadian tire that included all of the accessories that are not included with the BGE I knew that the grill would make me happy and the price would make my wife happy. http://www.visiongrills.com/

The vision pro model (same size as the large BGE)is available at canadian tire for $699. The vision classic is available at a lot of costco locations for varying prices, but $499 was one that I saw.
The classic does not include some of the accessories.

Char Grill makes a Kamado style grill that is Pansh style, called the Akorn It is available at wal-mart but needs some mods to work well. It is metal, like the big steel keg from Broil King - so it does not have the same thermal mass as the BGE or other ceramic kamados.

After grilling and smoking with Charcoal on a Kamado I would not go back to gas.

I first saw these and thought they were awesome, then I saw the price and laughed!! I would never pay that for a small smoker. For WAY WAY less you could build one out of brick that would be far better than the egg. But then lots of smokers are way over priced. I saw the backwoods smoker and thought, that is a cool design, but for $5000 I'll build one myself for $100 worth of stainless and parts and a weekend of work.

Hey jgorm. A kamado is not just a smoker and I don't know where you got the $5000 price from. With a kamado you can smoke, grill or bake

There is a great terra cotta smoker here that is right up jgorms alley...http://www.instructables.com/id/a-little-brown-egg-in-Maine%3A-terra-cotta-smoker/

The kamado design is very efficient and when you are done cooking, just shut off the airflow and the charcoal left is useable. Open the dampers and you can sear a nice rib eye, close them off and you can go low and slow for pulled pork or ribs.

This is waaaay ot from kiting so let's get back to kiting.

having been married for 7 years and being wrong about everything for 7 years I'm not surprised. It took years of trying for the BGE, then our gas grilll went kaput and I made what might be the first right decision of our wedded life. It was only by telling her what we'd save by getting the vision grill at canny tire that she actually thought it was a good idea. It is not a weekend job.

This is the one I was referring to with the 5000 comment. https://www.bigpoppasmokers.com/store/bbq-smokers-grills/bac...

I know the eggs are far cheaper and have a cult like following.
I use a cheap $60 smoker from home depot. It works great but I have to tend it every hour or 2. I like smokingmeatforums.com (it may be something similar, I'm on my phone now) they have loads of info on the cheap 50gal drum smoker. I plan on building a large brick smoker for the house and a stainless double wall smoker for camping.

Macboy- i love my green eggs (have a medium and large) and would recommend the large in a heart beat we cook on it year around. I know there are a couple of other brands that are similiar and i would think if ceramic then very comparable but dont know. as for rubs and such my favorites are:
dizzy pig- love the swamp venom and dizzy dust
bad byrons butt rub is the best all around if you like a little spicy and no added sugar- i use this on pork and chicken regularly
scott
looking forward to checking out the other sites listed above but back to work for now

This just reaffirms my research guys - thanks! (I should have just started here months ago  )

I've looked at the other Kamado/keg options out there and it all came down to A) the ceramic construction and B) a local retailer happens to offer a lifetime warranty on the Eggs. To be true I think I just made the progression through research when otherwise I might have bought my way through the progression starting with a pimped out Weber cart. The one thing that was for sure was that my days of gas flame cooking were done. Then the sample feast sealed the deal.

Through the years I have tried one of the metal cylinder smokers (electric) AND I tried some slow smokes in the old outdoor kitchen but never to much success (although I did successfully caramelize 8 quarts of apple juice in the smoker ; )

Big tip i forgot earlier- get your self a map gas torch (with a hose) for lighting the lump. three spots in the egg for 20 secs each and you will have a nice set of coals to cook on in 10-15 mins. I think its faster and obviously more fun then "clicking" on a gas grill:D

If I had the money I'd go for the Primo XL over the bge too. The shape is more versatile. In defence of the BGE they have a second storey as well as years of happy users, but the oval shape of the XL is amazing. The Primo has a 20 year warranty. You'll be dead by then anyway.
The vision grills now have lifetime warranty on the ceramics. With the buying power of costco behind them ( now available online, but cheaper in store ) it may be a game changer for some. I know if I'd shown up at home with a 1200 buck ceramic grill without all the nik naks included my wife would have shaken her head exorcist style. After she actually ate some of the food from the grill she knew that I'd made a "correct" decision for a change....

my wife begged me for a new gas grill this spring...so I went 475$ for a chargrill inferred. Have 2 months on it now and was kinda starting to like it till I was doing dinner for 20 on fri and it just shut off(finished the food) figured it was outta gas?? next day i take off the cylinder it didn’t seem empty but hooked up a new one anyway..could hear gas leaking out of the connection hose between regulator and tank...long story short defective part, 2 months old, 475$ they ask me to pay for the shipping for a new connecting hose...I was still ok w/ this till they said 7-10 days...kinda lost it then got a supervisor and they say will send it 2 day instead for the 9$ they charged my ccrd. Now i get to smell other people cooking and get all pissed off...they were having steaks next door last night....i had reheated pizza

Well now you've gone and done it guys. I did a quick check to refresh my memory on the Primo and remembered that I'd crossed them off the list because I couldn't get them local despite the fact that they seemed a bit smarter than the Eggs in terms of cooking surface/shape. Well, I made a quick call and there's one in Lethbridge and the price isn't too off the mark from the Egg. Add to the new dilemma - a good friend of mine is commuting every week from Lethbridge to Edmonton while he waits for his house down south to sell.

Guess I got some more reading to do here.....
