Alvord is OPEN!!!!

Not sure as of this afternoon but so far it looks like Alvord is closed to public use. Not sure how they can lock the gate but might be interesting to see what happens.

I was planning on going but now I have to rethink the 12 hour trip. If I drive the truck I can drive through the gate. everyone fallow me in and we can play untill the BLM guys get hired back to work and haul us off the clink.

At least we will have health insurance after we get beat up by the guys trying to kick us out.

Wow hadn't thought of it, but I guess a bunch of our favorite spots might be closed if they're national parks....

Tell us guys what's closed... Alvord obviously... What about Jekyll Island? Ivanpah? Anastasia park (Fla)?

I think Jekyll and Anastasia are state parks, but not sure....

Seems to me that it takes a lot more work to close an open space then to just do nothing at all. I would think it a total waste of money in a partial govt shut down to have these workers 1) show up and 2) actively restrict access. Even if its only to lock a gate. Are they afraid Lake Mead or Alvord will go anywhere if not under constant supervision. Ridiculous really. Everyone currently holding office should be fired (voted out) and we should start all over again with strict term limits so people come, do their job and go home without the opportunity to be influenced by lobbyists with long term interests. By the people FOR the people.... really???

I just talked to a guy that left yesterday from Alvord and he said they had 50 mph gusts and it was cold. It couldn't have been better.

He reported that the area is BLM property and it is open. He said there is no way to block all of the possible entrances onto the lake bed. He is a long time landsailer who was one of the original kitebuggiers before he turned 80 so now he just lays around and complains if he isnt going 60mph plus in his micro.

Still need to check before I make the drive.

As for the guys who caused this, shoot them all. not really, you know what I mean.

The system is broken in many ways not apparent to the general public.

Despite all the hoopla about the "Government Shutdown," it's all just bread and circuses.

Here's some fun trivia.

Feel free to peruse it and decide for yourself if either the government or the mass really has a vested interest in the general public.

November 15th, 2011
Scott Brown Introduces Bill Applying Insider Trading Laws To Congress: ‘We Serve The Public, Not Our Bank Accounts’

Quote:

Brown’s move comes after a 60 Minutes report showed that House Financial Services Committee Chairman Spencer Bachus (R-AL) traded on information he received in private briefings at the height of the financial crisis, earning nearly $30,000.

Quote:

But these positions don’t change the fact that Brown worked to water down key provisions of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law before granting the law his support, actions which earned him the appreciative donations of the financial services industry.

November 16th, 2011

April 4th, 2012

Quote:

“It’s a good first step, And in the months ahead, Congress should do even more to help fight the destructive influence of money in politics and rebuild the trust between Washington and the American people.”

September 12, 2012

Brown pushed STOCK Act, but bill Obama signed in ad was not his

Quote:
"So I filed a bill to stop insider trading in Congress, and got it passed and signed into law,” Brown says in the ad, which shows him standing with Obama at a White House signing ceremony.

Brown’s bill, however, was not signed into law. The bill that made it to Obama’s desk was introduced by Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, the Connecticut independent.

All sounds good.... if you skip over the fact that these people actually needed to pass a bill to reaffirm that using their offices for insider trading would be frowned upon by their constituents.... but hey.... it's Washington.

Then BAM.... fast forward 7 months.

April 15th, 2013
Boston Marathon.... pressure cooker bombs... city wide man-hunt. The nation glued to their TVs watching the drama unfold.

Meanwhile, back on Auntie Em's farm....

To my way of thinking, there's something singularly sleazy about hammering the news of this bill passing into law during an election cycle, and then using the cover of a national tragedy to repeal/gut it. Hey.... that's just me.

Quote:
Both chambers of Congress quickly — and near silently — approved the repeal legislation at the end of last week by unanimous consent, just before heading home to their districts.

Read that again slowly....
Both chambers of Congress.... House and Senate.
Unanimous consent.... Republicans and Democrats.

Think about that when someone says the Government Shutdown happened because Democrats and Republicans couldn't work together. Apparently they can when it's something that's important to them.

Of course, if this is not common knowledge.... well, the system is working just the way it's designed to.

One of the other clauses that was gutted out of the STOCK law:

Quote:

That's right. If you want to look up the financial disclosure forms filed by high-level congressional staffers — say, to find out whether they've been using the privileges of their positions to make well-timed stock trades — you have to come to this office.

Holman showed me how it works. You have to enter your name and address into a computer, and then you can search. But you have to know the name of the person you are searching for. If he or she has filed a financial disclosure form, it will come up as a PDF, which you can print at a cost of 10 cents a page.

"The database itself is almost meaningless," says Holman. He says the only option for those who want to get a comprehensive look at what some 2,900 staffers have filed is to review the cases one by one. "And that's just too big a job for anybody to do."

The STOCK Act was supposed to make this task significantly easier. Records for members of Congress, the executive branch and their staffs were supposed to be posted online in a searchable, sortable and downloadable format.

If you wanted to see who traded health care stock just before a committee acted on a health care bill, it would be easy. No trips to the basement required.

But there were concerns, especially among the 28,000 executive branch staff who would be required to post their financial disclosures online.

Bonus Round
Government is "shut down." Should seems like kind of a big deal. However, maybe I missed. Not one ping in the news about any changes to the 2013 Congressional Calendar. Any kind of indication that elected officials assigned enough importance to the event to maybe reconsider a schedule that they established at the end of last November.

If you really want to get depressed, take a long hard look at how the Office of Government Ethics is set up, the number of disclosures filed, and the long convoluted path any disclosure has to take to reach any kind of resolution.

It's an object lesson in trashing hope through attrition.

OK.... pretty sure I have broken the soapbox from jumping up and down on it so hard.

ATB,
Sam

Wow Sam... You're just too smart. That was indeed a veer, but as always,... well said.

Feel like a good conversation on a postmodernist view of "normality" or should we just talk about kites some

You're awesome, and thanks for that interesting read.
