The Ozone Chrono Kite
BY MARCUS W · JANUARY 30, 2014

Ozone have just announched an exciting new member of their foil family. The Ozone Chrono is a closed cell kite suitable for riding on land, water and snow. Naturally this kite is going to be rapidly compared to Flysurfers offerings such as the Speed 3 and Speed 4 Lotus. We are hoping to get our hands on the new Chrono at the Ozone SKM at the end of the month. The idea of the Chrono is to provide a new high aspect foil for high speed and big hangtime and the sizes certainly make sense for this. The Chrono is due for release in March and will be arriving in 12m, 15m and 18m sizes. We definitely think there is space both in the general kite market, and the current Ozone kite range for a super high aspect foil.

Stay tuned for more news as it comes in.

What Ozone are saying:

“It’s a high performance, water re-launchable foil kite design that excels on Water, Land & Snow. You’ll be laughing while boosting huge and going into hyper speed on those light wind days with the Chrono! Sizes 12m, 15m, 18m. More Information & Pictures coming soon. Stay tuned and excited as we are about the all new Ozone Chrono!”

ATB,
Sam

Looks super high aspect. I'm guessing they cost somewhere between $1600 and $2200 knowing ozone.

That aspect ratio looks dangerously huge. :o I would think twice before using that kite anywhere else besides the beach. I'm expecting lots of bow-ties and rib-crushing gusts with something like this.

Also, I don't know whether the kite will have depower capability or not. It looks as though there are too few bridles in that second picture for that to be the case?

It's most definitely a depower. Couldn't imagine there would be a market for an 18m crazy high aspect FB for all terrain board sports....not to mention it would sound terribly dangerous and have zilch for wind range.

Edit: Confirmation @ 6sec in the video...Lower left you can catch the top of the mixer.

Obviously a depower, primarily a race kite., great for water. Same market as for Spleene X19 and Flysurfer Speed4 Lotus.
Few bridles is a later trend in performance paragliders and both Ozone and Flysurfer make them. I was so excited to see just A/B/Z bridles on Speed4 8-10m. Less drag, simpler, less pulleys. Also with a thick profile and closed cells it should be almost impossible to make a bow tie.
I can't speculate much more.

It looks like it would be definitely be competitive in a PKRA-style event. With that kind of profile, I'm guessing it will have a speed advantage over LEIs such as Ozone's own Edge.

Depending on price and real world experiences, this could be a contender to the spleene and flysurfers. Could be fun snowkiting doing speed runs, and it could be a booster too.

It looks like a closed cell buggy race kite is what it looks like. Never seen a repower foil with that much AR. Unless that is some optical illusion.

Yeah, I think FS will beat it on general usability, but the Chrono will be in the same league as Elf for ultimate light wind slaying...

Scudley has a Sky Country closed cell depower foil that has a fairly high A/R... I think they make another with a higher A/R too.

It has tried to do him in a couple of times too:(

Cheddar is right, looks like an ELF but lower AR. If it flies anywhere close to ELF or Parvis but with a broader wind range it will make for a sweet light wind kite.

Wow, that is a lot of money for a kite. I suppose FS will come out with an offering and break the $3k mark next year if the Chrono does well. That extra $35 for the race bar is a lot of money to pay for a piece of climbing rope.

The 2nd video is not the best promo for a kite of this money at all. It was nice to see the rider un-bowtie the kite nicely though not without effort.

My guess on pricing in my earlier post was way off - even for the 12m :o

if you want to be able to ride in the light of conditions you're going to pay for it.

the chrono 18m has the same performance as the 21m (i use to own a 21 S3 - DLX)

the race bar is good for those that do course racing as you can lean back further and still have reach access to the trim.

I'm not looking to start a fight so take the following simply as comments but not comments aimed at you.

I'm sure its a great kite for those who can or have to have it, but based on the 2nd video, one is going to have to really define "light conditions" as that kite was struggling quite a bit in what was obviously low wind. So is it a great sub 10mph kite or is it a great sub 5mph kite?

My 7 year old 14m Eskimo does very well around 6 or 7 mph and has so much power I need to put it away by around 11 or 12 mph if the wind isn't super smooth.

I'm sure the chrono has more lift, speed and depower. What I'm not sure is when that speed and lift kick in. I mean is a few less mph really worth an extra $1 - $2k?

none taken

but youre comparing apples to oranges - open cell vs closed cell

i have a vapor 16m and I use that a few times (when my FS S3 wasnt even filling) on the water (somewhere on the vimeo is a video of it) and get away with less than the chrono 18m.

Ram Air will always be king for light wind.

I found my 14m Eskimo and 18m Phantom overlapping with a bit higher + more comfortable top end on the arc. Like you, I found I needed about 5+ mph wind . We all too often have less. I have no regrets so far in selling my 14m to help fund a 19m SA2. That thing wants to fly when I can hardly feel a breeze. So for me there is room for a high aspect closed cell.

With my budget I will never be allowed one of these until they come up second hand ! As was the case with the SA.

I am only amazed it took Oz so long to venture into the closed cell market.
