What do you do on your lunch break *VIDEO*

We've been having a lot of serious cold fronts blowing into north Ga bringing some record low temperatures and some much more serious winds. Typically wind in Atlanta doesn't get much higher than 12 mph, but it has been regularly blowing in the teens and we've had a few days with it over 20 mph. These are a rarity I can tell you as prior to the last month, I've become very well acquainted with my 8.6 m leaving my smaller kites in the car. Not the case in recent history though.

Fortunately for me I get an hour long lunch break and work at an 8,000 member church with some huge sports fields just across the parking lot, so when the winds are up, I eat my lunch while I'm working and take a "kite lunch" during my break.

Knowing the high winds were up I brought my GoPro along to film my first official video when the camera belongs to me.

Enjoy: Epic Butt Scuds

Spencer, looks like you had a lot of fun and just tell the wife you have some more scraps (your pants) for her scrapbooking. I have several pairs of panys now that are dedicated to kiting only as well although for me its usually rips and grass stains around the knees:(

I hope this is a typo... Or a Freudian slip maybe?

Awesome thought on the scrapbook

Great video. I like how you have 1st and 3rd person shots. Do you use 2 cameras?

No, for the first shots I just repositioned the GoPro mount on my helmet and set the helmet on the ground, the second shots I was wearing the helmet and I edited them all together... The "on board" shots and the 3rd person shots were actually filmed on different days (with different kites).

I can only afford 1 GoPro :)

Nice spot to fly. I wouldnt dare fly at lunch, not enough time to have fun. Much easier to call in sick and fly all day.
I have underwear that looks like your jeans, and I still wear them.
I have a pair of kevlar motorcycle jeans I use for butt scuding, only takes 1 little stick to ruin a month of trying to finnish a #2 without screaming.:embarrased:

Maybe a little TMI... hope the stains are actually from grass. I'd like to see you scudding in your tidy whities... :o:evil:

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

I'm very fortunate to have the fields at my lunchtime disposal... No fear of sticks though, the fields are regularly manicured and stick free. I've always wanted to try to buggy there, but I'm afraid the Recreation Ministry staff would have a fit... Not to mention 1 hour translates to 5 min drive, 10 min set up, 30 min flying time, 10 min break down, 5 min drive back to the building... NO time to add a bug to the mix, and they are occupied on Saturdays... The static time satiates the desires and soothes the cravings of the addiction.

Is that your church or just a church in general. The church I go to doesn't have the grounds for it but there are several churches in my area that have plenty of room. I have often thought about asking them to fly there but I haven't because I know they would look at me with a blank stare trying to process the question that was asked to them. Even if I explained it, I don't think they would understand or just think I'm too weird.

@ Ssayre:

I've been on staff for 6 years + and used to be members too, but we attend a much smaller church now that is much closer to our house. The church's policy with the fields is that they are open for public use as long as there is no scheduled event or team sports. We also have them patrolled by security guards regularly, as we do have vandals and thieves try to break into the field house and soda machines.

Different churches will have different policies about their property. What you can do is contact the church offices and ask if the fields are open for public use. Tell them you like to fly big kites and were wondering if you can use their fields, but didn't want to trespass. If they give you the go ahead, don't bring out the bug until you've developed a good presence then maybe consider it. I don't ride my buggy on the fields not only because time doesn't allow, but also because I think both my boss and the Recreation staff would be none to pleased about it.

Don't worry about seeming weird, the easiest most simple way to ask is this: "Are your fields open for public use? I have a hobby of flying very large kites and was wanting to know if I could use your fields?"... That is easy and strait forward and leaves little to no room for questions.

Thanks Soliver, I like the way you worded the question. Now that I am home I will watch the video with the sound on. I was in the office the first time I watched it.
