I read a review for a Peter Lynn Twister IIR 7.7 with handles and thought nice kite, till I found it was a FB kite. This kite is recommended as a jumping machine. I thought FB kite were bad for jumping as you can't control your descent like a depower kite.

What am I missing.

I am going to guess you are talking static flight jumping.

Well it goes like this, you can jump with FB kites and with re directs you can land smoothly. It's all about kite control and having enough kite over your head. I would not suggest jumping with anything less than 5m, it's just not a chance you really want to take if something doesn't work just right. Timing for re direct is key.

I wouldn't suggest jumping till you have a good handle on kite control and re directing. Try some small jumps maybe, but don't attempt to jump high right off the back. I would also suggest jumping somewhere with a soft landing like a beach, at least it has some forgiveness.

Kite jumping "invented" on FB. I believe that the Twister was Peter Lynns answer to Flexi's Blade. Both are "high Lift" FBs. A lot of people swear by FBs for jumping, though may not be for the faint of heart as the only way to control the power is through proper placement in the window.

Flash Austin was kitesurfing and jumping with a 2 line Flexifloil before 4 line was even out there. Sort of before the 2 line Wipika inflatable was out there.

Like the others pointed out all kites have lift. It is more about where and how you send them. Kites like the Blade and Twister are well set up FB for jumping.

For static jumping I'm much more comfortable sending it big with a fixed bridle and handles in my hands. Past favorite kites for it are original HQ crossfire and blade IV.

If you are considering static jumping then a FB is a good way to go. Depowers simply do not work well (properly) flying static. Yes it is true you can have a depower at zenith .. pull in the bar and get air. But in order to do this you will have to be extremely well powered.
My point kind of being yes a fixed bridle is harder to control the decent because you have to have good kite skills to do it properly. But to do the same jump with a depower you will also need very good kite skills because you will be flying at the upper wind range of the kite.
Bottom line ... kite jumping requires very good kite flying skills

Jumping with depower uses exactly the same technique as jumping with FB, no different. You rarely get lift from a depower by sticking it above your head and pulling the bar in, unless it's very high wind and only then will be a limp experience.

If anything, foils teach commitment. Once you're in the jump you have no choice but to ride it out until you're back on the ground. Bailing half way through a jump can be dangerous. Depower gives you the option to bail if you loose your nerve.

Start with foils then later use the same technique with depower if that's your goal.

I agree with Red Sky. Jumping on fb reminds me of my college days when we would ride down stairs on our mountain bikes. You had to commit yourself to riding all the way to the bottom without braking. The guys who tried to brake or bail in the middle wiped out horribly.

You might want the 5.5 first. Going to a 7.7 from a 4 is a big jump. I have the 3, 4, and 5.5 twisters. I want the big one bad for when the wind is mellow. The difference between the 4m and 5.5 is substantial. When there was no way the 4 could get me any airtime, the 5.5 had no issue. It also reacts slower which is nice for more hang time without extra height. The twisters are fun kites!
