Howdy Buggy'rs
Instead of telling everyone to lower inflation pressure to allow Troy to finally win (or at least place in) a race on the playa, I thought I'd
speak to the issue of tires.
There seems to be some confusion regarding tread, traction and inflation pressures.
Any tire will work out here.
4-ply tires will simply last longer.
I've watched riders use up a 2-ply tire in a couple days.
Particulary those who slide a lot.
Now to tread vs smoothies:
Most riders are on grass most of the time and a treaded tire gives better grip and helps minimize being pulled downwind.
Out on the playa, a smooth (no-tread) tire puts more rubber in contact with the ground and helps grip and cohesion.
Tire pressure is the element usually ignored.
Lowering the pressure puts more rubber down but increases resistance and drag.
Higher pressure makes you faster, but you have less grip because less tire touches the ground.
Lately I have been assembling "PhatBoy" rims from PL aluminum/steel 3-pc rims.
These increase the rims width from the standard 4" to 6" (BigFoot rims are 8"
and allow the use of a wide range of wider tires without the problem of finding 21x12x8 BigFoot tires.
These rims are intended for the rear only.
So no new fork or axle.
12mm and 15mm hubs available.
16x6.50x8 4-ply turf tread and airline rib.
Check it out at buggytown.
