video run from the north back down to base camp

Here is the video from my journey further north along the beach - this is after I turned to come back south to base camp. Only my tire tracks, I'd have to see video of tracks past mine to see if anyone (Errol) went further :P

I had some additional text at the end that got chopped off the video, I may have to re-load it, but here it is anyway. It's just under an 8 min cruise back so grab a refreshment to watch.

I didn't want to have to do it, but I will post my longer (because I went farther) video as soon as I pull the footage. 4GB clips take forever to even load into an editor...

Bring on the video! The beach looked wide enough, though Mark wisely chose not to have a hour walk back in case something went wrong.

I wonder who was faster? By my guesstimate Mark averaged not quite 21 mph on his return run. (2.6 miles in 7.5 minutes). Kind of fun to guess speed from video actually.

Was that a measurement from google on the distance? I checked distance on the gps and it was 2.1 miles beyond where Angus and Errol turned and I thought it was 3 point something miles in total back to buggy camp (but I was doing a bit of math on the fly and could have been off).
I was using a 12m Phantom at the time and I think Errol was running his 12m Charger 2 - it should be close.
Video! Video! Video!

Now I'm wishing I had filmed all my reverse running too - that way you get to see where you've been.....next year

I measured using this; http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calcu... from the Orange roofs where your vid started until the easy to see sign you pass @ 7:30 into the video. I was originally thinking you had done 2.85 miles, which gets you a couple more mph's if so, but re-watching the video confirmed the shorter distance.

yes it was wednesday Spencer - that's the only day I have video from about an hour before the rain and 2 hours after the rain

Nick - i used that calculator and it's coming out to roughly 2.592 so you are correct in the run north of 2.6 miles from the sign post

Jason, I took a ride down a number of times to our boardwalk steps by the townhouse and saw David and his family at the beach. I took the tandem back to give David a ride but he was on a business call about real estate so I circled the area for 15-20 min but he was still on the call so I owe him a tandem ride next year.

I'd also like to do a tandem with two kites next year if someone is willing - the same size kites and just the right wind to work them a few strokes to get rolling then park and ride. It's just the turn that needs attention in a tighter area if you build up speed

Oh good god Itay you just made my head explode! That would be so amazing! Has that even been done before? I am definitely down for attempting, but that has got to take near perfect synchronization.

I don't know if it's been done. I've bugged with a buddy on a tandem before two kites and seen others at Ivanpah riding dual kites but not a deadman. I was thinking about it and if you down turn both kites at the same time that would then put the back kite in the lead going around but would be the better way to attempt it.
It would be harder following the lead kite to do the down turn because one would turn and a second later the second kite would turn and you would have the power and pressure all off synchronization.
It would need to be perfect otherwise someone is getting yanked out of the buggy.

I was thinking about that too, very high chance of OBE. With me in the caboose while we are making the approach I need to be pretty hard on the brakes to slow my kite down and create enough room for us both to do a synchronized downturn to reduce the chances of getting uneven pull from the kites and ejecting me. Once we get through the downturn, I have to fully release brakes, and you need a little brake tension as needed to keep the kites from colliding. You have to crank the wheel because my kite will re-enter the window first and surge pretty hard. I would be the one ejected if we mess up, not you, lol. I am totally down to try it next time!

Great Vid. At 3:42 or so you can see what I call "Turtle Rocks" on the beach as Mark heads south. That's about when I turn around. Before that, or north of that, you can see how narrow the beach is and you need just the right wind to get out of there without getting screwed.

For those who have not been to JIBE, this was on Wednesday right after a 40 min rainstorm had mostly cleared the beach of tourists and toddlers, leaving it all for us.

Even with tourists and toddlers there is plenty of room for us. All the more reason JIBE 2015 will be an all-week-day event from Monday to Friday, May 4-8.

Thanks Mark

Thanks Mark! I feel like my beach buggy jones is somewhat taken care of after that. I even felt the splashes. I'm sure I've never been that far north on JI.

The 2 kite deadmans turn would have to have both kite downturning at the same time and the rear kite becoming the lead kite. Seems like it would need to be a medium kite-medium wind kind of day. I might work on an Ivanpah version of that. I'd need to get up to speed on the turns, then Brian and I could give it a try. As I run through a mental video of it, there seems to be trouble at the end of the turn. I guess both kites doing an upturn unwinds everything and puts the front kite back in front.

Yeah, the very end where the caboose rider's kite re-enters the window first is the most sketchy part. The buggy is moving very slowly at that point, and almost facing the wrong way, so you have to either do some super sharp turn with the buggy or upturn IMMEDIATELY with the kites to stop the backseat flyer from being ripped out. It seems possible, but would definitely be tougher with larger kites. I think mid teens wind and 5-6m kites would work best and give each pilot enough room to fly and perform turns so close. The bigger the kite, the harder it would be to simultaneously make the turns without getting wingtips tangled in each other's bridles.

the hardest part of JIBE, WWBB, NABX, IBB, SOBB and all ...is the ending, and going home. It's going to be long withdrawal pains.

looking at the video again i just realized I'm using my short light line set on that arc so even though I still have room it's around a 55ft line set - I was wondering why it looks wider than it felt as the beach narrowed.
