advice on some second hand kites

lookingnat getting a quiver together for use on water, been flying fb on land for 10 months and currently doing IKO course for kitesurfing.

had a quick look at my local second hand site, and have seen the following for sale

North Rebel 2009 12 and 9m bar line etcs

Ozone catalyst 2010??? 12m and 8m (pic below)

older kites i know but the price of two kites for less than one new feels like a good way to start.

Also slightly off topic but will these be ok to use on land? not much experience of tube kites but figure they could pop if slammed into the ground?

yup - well lot of folk are like me and getting lessons when the waters warm! also the locals all say that from mid august the winds start getting more reliable and are good through the autumn so its a good time to get kitted out. Going to hassle the guys who are doing the training and see what if any stuff they are going to be replacing soon :D

Mood: Where's the water?

Cut my teeth on 2005 North Rhinos (C-kites)....Land boarding.....I'm still alive....
Still have a soft spot in my heart for them....but I'm sold on the new designs...for water...
Now rolling/and some splashing with Switch Elements...(and VERY happy)..

2012 or better...only way to go...for water..IMHO.

ROCK ON!

why 2012 or newer? There hasn't been much improvement on LEI kites since around 2008 or 2009. I have RPMs from 2010 and 2011 and they are identical to the 2014 RPMs, albeit the colors changed. What's more important is how much the kites have been used and how/where they were stored to ensure the integrity of the fabric and valves.

Too many kites, boards, and etceteras.

It's the decay of materials you gotta worry about - bladders don't last forever even if the kite wasn't out in the UV all the time.

I'm still rocking my 2011 kites, but I got all but one brand new. They were, IMO, better than the 2010 models... especially in bar pressure.

Rebel would be good, but Ozone side pull QR was never any good...

How much were they?

Banging into the ground is ok-ish, but dragging is a problem...

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

well most of them and others have already sold!! looks like second hand gear goes quick out here. Im going to look at vulcan. its 2010 aparently got used for 1 season and then packed away with a slow puncture. in dollars its shes asking just over $300, but i can probably haggle a bit. going to cost a few bucks for a repair kit and then i get the fun of learning how to fix a kite which is no bad thing imop.
If i choose to go for it. Im kind of thinking that im going to buy a new 2014 rally 12m as they are nocking the price down because of the new 2015 model. It gets rave reviews ect so reckon i'll get that and a board as a packet and then maybe this vari vulcan or some other second hand 9m kite for the windier days.
Still got the Red Bull Race this Saturday to go and haggle with sales reps. They'll all be hyper and irratic on said energy drink. so could be a good time to strike a deal. - I live in Sweden so every thing is rather expensive due to high tax and they charge you a fortune for importing from the US.

,A way i think on it, it is kind of like buying a computer, it will soon be outdates and old ones can do most of the stuff well enough but its nicer to have the better graphics and faster hard drive right if you can?

If you're really sure you're into it, it sounds like you're already a decent pilot, so I wouldn't feel bad about buying a brand new kite on sale. Don't feel like you have to rush into it though.

Patching a slow leaking bladder might be a very cost effective way to get some gear you can call your own. beware leaky valves, but those can often be replaced just as easy as fixing a small puncture.

I actually did the puncture fix with one of my first kites and it worked out ok. There are youtube videos showing you step by step and it's not very hard at all if you have a lot of space to lay the kite out.
