Vimeo Music Copyright.
I've had a Vimeo plus account for a few years now because it allows me and others to download the full HD file from the site, but more importantly, it
doesn't have the same 'net nanny' music policy that youtube does.
Until now. Just spent 2 1/2 hours uploading a 1gb file onto Vimeo to find a 'music match copyright' notice stuck on it and Vimeo won't play it.
Being a muso, I'm aware of copyright laws and Vimeo has always stated that you can't use other people's songs without their permission. They have
also stated that should a publisher request a video be removed due to music copyright infringement, then Vimeo will remove said video. In the past it
has not been a problem and I have often used other people's music in my vids 'cos it's what I want to listen to when I watch the vid.
Personally, I have bought a stack of music that I never would have found if not for videos and I think it's great advertising for musicians and we
should all be allowed to use any of our bought and paid for music for non commercial vids. The law doesn't agree with me however, and now, neither
does Vimeo.
So a heads-up to all you Vimeo users. It may pay to test with a really small, compressed file first before hitting the upload button for a large
file.

It doesn't seem to have any effect on vids with third party music that I already have on the site - maybe different publisher though. Though surely
if they're going to start doing it for new vids, they have to block older ones? Copyright laws don't differentiate between what I put up now or what
I put up last year I wouldn't have though. I've read through (or tried to) their 'fair use' policy and I need more coffee to absorb it! Bottom line
is, it's up to the courts if you claim 'fair use'. I'm not getting tangled up in that mess. Looks like you're gonna have to put up with me banging
on the guitar on my vids from now on. Sheesh.

The tester is a good idea. I have let some of my own videos sit in Youtube's private purgatory listing for a week or two before publishing, just to
see if there is going to be issues. If there are then normally you can just click 'acknowledge' and the problem goes away. Deadmau5 made a copyright
claim on one of my videos and YT simply asked me to swap the music for one of theirs. The video had over 5000 hits but I decided to delete it with the
intention of uploading it with another track but I haven't yet got around to it. I couldn't care less for hits. I just enjoy making crappy videos.
Damn paying for vimeo. Go on YT John. I think their copyright thing is more advanced giving you more options to put it right.

Don't think I'll be renewing my subscription this time round.
Too many lawyers and not enough common sense.

will it effect old stuff? not seeing any notifacation . maybe if you pay for commerical account its implies $ exchange vehicle on content? don't
know, certainly reduces choice in expressing the experience as the original purchase of music was intended, to enhance the moment ...how many times
must you purchase the right if you legally already have right to own and use the copy sold to you? hmm
$ will kill the open internet
who woulda thought the virtual world could be collared by an illusion...mammon become master.
i knew it ! time to play my banjo!! and it'll be PHREE to all! https://vimeo.com/38705378

I am making my own music so issue solved
By the way, making and or producing music is hard work and those who make it are trying to make a living doing so, so even thogh it is a pain, to pay
or go through a process, just remember it is there living in most cases

Of course, but as John said, he has bought a stack of music that he never would have found if not for videos. I have also discovered new material in
this way and then purchased a new clean version for use in my own videos / MP3 player.
Youtube mostly tolerates it and unless they're asked to intervene and they often insert a link to buy the actual track.

I agree music shared via video is an excellent way to spread a tune...... Too bad it isn't "profitable" enough for the record labels
