Help with landboarding???

was hoping you guys could point me in the correct direction of land boarding. I live an hour away from the beach, and can't always make the drive for an afternoon session. There is a park not to far from my house that I would like to utilize for after work sessions. I'm sure it will be fairly gusty. Any suggestions on kite selections, boards, ect ? I was hoping to use my inflatable kiteboarding kites. Should I upsize or down size kites for grassy conditions? I own lot's of body armor from base jumping that I will probably use during the introduction period. Oh.... I grew up skating so i'll probably want to purchase a board that will be good for progressing on. Thanks in advance

Size for the gusts and be prepared to work the kite in the lulls. Grass can be fast once you break traction so start off going down wind and then cut back. The longer and thicker the grass the more difficult it will be to break free and get to speed. If its real thick you'll need to upsize a bit. If the grass is longer than the wheels are high you will be plowing / mowing the grass the whole time and that's not fun and generally not rideable. If its like a standard lawn and damp at all you should move along pretty well.

Depower Quiver: 14m Gin Eskimo, 10m Gin Eskimo III, 6m Gin Yeti, 4.5m Gin Yeti (custom bridle and mixer)

Welcome to the forum Do-it!

For boards check out these discussions:

I've only ever used the MBS Core 95, so cant speak on the other boards out there; Trampa, Flexifoil, etc.

You should be fine using your inflatables, with the understanding that they will not be as forgiving to making contact with the ground as they are with water ;)

Carl has some excellent landboard instruction:

So, really what I need is board suggestions- I'm 155lbs/70kg. I want a light board that will be good for jumping and performing well in semi tall grass. I have kites from 9m-17m.

Hi I'm in the situation as you. I started landboarding over the summer when we typically have lighter and offshore winds. I had been kiting on water for 15 years and skateboarded since I was a kid but this is my first season kiting on land. Here is what I learned besides the obvious wear a helmet and good pads. Use same size kite as water if you are experienced learning under powered is no fun but keep in mind gusts and that your upper range will be much lower than water. In the beginning point your board off the wind at least 30-45 degrees and go downwind don't edge. upwind is automatic on landboard downwind is harder you have to stand flatter on the board. Use a tough LEI kite if you're not using a foil ie your wave or freestyle not your race kite like I did. I've never tried sand because the sand here seems to soft and deep but grass is fun especially when a little wet.

I use the MBS Pro 90 really fun and pretty light board with great bindings and mostly Flysurfer Cronix 12/10 because of easy self launch reverse launch strong construction great wind range and gust handling . Speed 4 15 for super light days. Have fun and be safe:)

I ended up purchasing an Mtb core 90. Land boarding is a lot more fun than I first anticipated. First session was nice, but it took some getting used to. Winds were cross on so I struggled with the downwind leg at first.Second session I logged 38 miles with an average of 13mph and have the blisters to prove it.Some of the miles average was 17mph. I had no idea you could achieve this speed with only 4-5 mph of wind. Simply incredible. Have about ten sessions now all in roughly the same conditions. Jumping takes a little getting used to but not so different than the water. Have yet to land a backroll but it will happen soon enough. My only complaint is the straps tear up the top of my feet pretty good, so I started wearing my neoprene socks. Thanks for the help.

Volock- I'm pretty sure it's illegal to wear shoes at the beach:) Plus, I only own sandals, work boots, snake boots, and dress shoes. Don't worry, the neoprene socks work great.
