Hyphen,
Thanks for the fact sheet on the compressibilty of water.

In fact I was just asking myself that very question...

>"... compressibility of water is small. An increase of pressure by 1 atmosphere (= 1013mbar = 14.7 psi) causes a decrease of the water volume by 5.3*10-5 of the original volume."<

I still maintain that the cited figure is so small that it renders the argument on the compressibility of water moot.

I know you disagree.

Let the discussion continue.

Corey,
I disagree. While the ratio of compressibilty of water (in fact most liquids) compared to an equal volume of a gas is drastically smaller it is not without measure. Now, I dont have my meter calibrated, so cannot comment on the validity of the above measurement. However, when measuring the ratio of compressibility of water compared to an equal MASS and volume of a gas, I think you might find that there is a nearly direct correlation. Comments?

Sorry Buddy,
Not a comparrison of gas to liquid.

The small, almost miniscule ability of water to compress is what makes hydro-dynamics a good energy generator.

5.3 x 10 to the Minus 5 If I read the quote correctly.

Now I am not making the argument that water is completely non-compressible, simply that the amount of compressibilty is so small as to make it of interest only to specific scientific calibrations.
To you and me, water doesn't compress in any meaningful manner.

God I love this.

Thanks again to Hyphen for reinvigoration this almost dormant topic.

WOOAA!! You guys were serious? I was completely tongue-in-cheek! But if you guys are serious about the topic, I will have to bow out. I have not studied fluid dynamics in this lifetime, nor do I plan on it... Even tho I do have a passing interest in it...

Not really an addition to, but more of a branch off of the original post....

I have been puzzling on this all night and did some searches. There was a reference to nanobubbles in one of the above links, so searching on that I found some practicle applications of nanobubbles (very small pockets of Oxygen or Ozone suspended in normal water). One being it appearantly aids the decomposition of organic matter by quite a large factor.

Now you have me curious as to the original topic that brought this line of converstion up. Care to cliff note me?

it's nothing new, they've been going at this for a while. Also, in case you didn't know by now, the iq range around the mayors van is fairly high in spite of the liberal use of shot cars and other more enlightened safety equipment.

Throw Peters big brain in the mix, and this can go on till dawn, often ending up with a solution to all the problems of the universe.

But you guys are missing the added factors of temperature on the compressibility of the water.

There's a wrench in the gears for ya!

Have you considered altitude in the equation?

Um, it was in the section right below, on the second link, titled "Compressibility drops as temperature increases"

Now the question is how much more efficient would hydroelectric plants be if diethyl ether was added to the water (diethyl ether fills in the clathrate cavities, making water even more dense)?
