camp fires on the lakebed?
This is part info and part question. Those of you that may be new to the lakebeds may not be aware that there are rules against open fires directly
on the lake bed. The Veterans among the kite buggy family have cleverly devised a way around this stipulation: Washing machine drums. Now there is
at least one thing to know before scavenging the alleys for discarded washers: You must condition the barrel (or basket?(or tub?)). During the first
fire, it will spit small pieces of porcelain at high velocity, so you will want to light a rather hot fire, and then stand well back. This is what I
have heard, so please, if somebody can correct me, feel free!
Now for my question: I have heard no pallets, for the obvious reason of nails/staples etc. But if I were to break down the pallets and personally
remove ALL the nails, what then? Is there another reason that pallets are still not desirable, or if they are metal free are they OK?

35 years ago I had a job stacking lumber on a machine, which hammered nails in
the numerous pieces. When it was done we called it a pallet. I recon if one would do the opposite. It would resort back to it's original state we
called lumber. Lumber burns, nails don't.

Sean,
Tigger has it right.
The edict against pallets is because most numbskulls simply drop the pallet on the ground, light it and later toss their beer bottles into the fire.
Next day is a pile of ashes, nails and melted glass shards.
(They NEVER clean up their mess)
So the rule against pallets is in actuality a rule against stoopidity.
In the burn barrel, a few nails left or forgotten in the lumber is no problem.
They stay in the barrel.
We'll have a trash bin at nabx for the cold ashes.
We already have at least three burn barrels scheduled to be at nabx.

So in case you didn't get the word, you CAN burn pallets, as long as you do it in the burn barrels!
No trash left on the playa. Leave no trace.
Pack it in, pack it out, pick up after yourself, and get a few pieces from the yahoos that went before us.
It's going to be a good year.
Buggy town has never looked so good.

thanks much for the info. I have been grabbing discarded pallets from the alley behind my work recently. I will come prepared with at least a couple
nights worth of wood for all to use. I have been keeping my eyes open for a barrel as well, but time will tell if I can find one...
Getting closer!!

You said it! I live by this and always try to pick up at least 1 can or bottle when I visit parks/beaches etc. My philosophy is to leave a place
cleaner than it was when I got there. Just feels right...
