El Mirage weekdays and Ivanpah weekends.............aj

It really depends on where you live. I live in Las Vegas so Jean is only 45 minutes away. Roach is a wee bit further both are in Nevada and one does not need a permit. Both lakes are considerably smaller than El Mirage or Ivanpah. Neither is policed by anyone except maybe the Lama himself. All Hail The Lama!

El Mirage and Ivanpah are officially located in California and by far much bigger lakes. One of the problems is a little know fact that unless one is a guest of someone on the lake in the immediate location of the permit holder, one needs a permit. Obtaining one is relatively easy, just go to the BLM site and apply for one. Takes 3 –4 weeks to get your own. If you choose not to and get caught, the BLM god will rein down on you and your possessions; and sell them at some state auction. I understand that the BLM for the most part leaves the general public alone on El Mirage but not so on Ivanpah. Ivanpah is not open to the general public.

There are not really any rules when you use Jean or Roach. Ivanpah has lot of rules and justifiably so. It is a pristine lakebed. And a huge eco system for the dwindling desert turtles. Two thirds of the lake is off limits, which still leaves one third.

Please don’t take offense to this; If you were to do something stupid on Jean or Roach; Corry might but I really wouldn't have much to say about it. If I were to see you do something stupid on Ivanpah; I would drop a dime as fast as you could blink an eye. And in a few weeks your stuff would be for sale at auction.

I find it odd for me to be the one with a more sane outlook.

The General Public is allowed on Ivanpah Dry Lake.
It is public land and not restricted.

The Motor Vehicles driven by said public is what is forbidden.
Limited motorized access along the shoreline to specific staging and camping areas is allowed by special permits issued by the BLM/Needles office.

El Mirage Dry Lake is a specified off-road vehicle use area.
The BLM manages both sites but different activites, allowed and restricted, determine how they are administered.

I am not some de facto playa-sheriff.
You deal with your own karma if you are a despoiler of nature.

I believe in "leave no trace" and try to be a loyal adherent.
I prefer to socialize with others sharing my view.

The original posting was a query as to relative aspects of two lake beds.
The question is too general.

Even the lake beds seem an arbitrary choice.

Maybe it's me, I didn't graduate from high school; If I learned anything from growing up in the 60's, I learned that limits of any kind are restrictions. If one isn't allowed to drive to the areas, how does one get there.

Oh yeah, I forgot, one could always walk. It's only a few miles.
