Cheddarhead - The grass is always greener in somebody else's yard to be sure! That spot isn't a University; rather, the building I was turning in front of is an ice skating rink. This is a large multi-field sports complex across the highway from the US Ski Team headquarters in Park City, UT. Same set of fields as where the artificial turf is that I scooped on a couple of weeks ago. When the wind is coming from the right direction (it wasn't that day) it has a big open stretch to clean up before it reaches that spot. That day it was coming over a small mountain/big hill and through some buildings before it reached my kite so it was pretty busted up and jumbled. Agreed that the hill between the soccer field and baseball field is pretty cool. That was the first time I'd tried rolling up and down it. I'm sure with better, stronger wind I'd be able to get pulled right up.

1oldkid - thanks for the compliments! My videos would be long and boring if I showed ALL my bloopers. I thought the way that last scene filmed was pretty funny. Hey, at least I crack myself up! ;)

Nice spot!! I've got some small uphills and through gates to get back to my house when I'm buggying in the paddock. I regularly get stuck the same way.

I wish I had hills. 3d buggying is more challenging. I like both your vids and especially love the scenery.
I would have tackled that hill at a more downwind direction, downlooping it just before the ascend rather than directly crosswind.

RedSky - Thanks for the nice comments and interesting that you mention downlooping. That very day I was experimenting with downloops for the first time. I tried and failed three or four times to complete the loop before running out of vertical space and collapsing the wing on the ground. It was a single skin so no harm no foul. Most certainly pilot error, but the 12M P2 is not the fastest of turners. I just ordered 5M line extensions from Chris at Hardwater (from whole I purchased the original kite) and am excited to try again with the longer lines, thinking it will buy me some more vert before swooping the kite under. Even with my failed attempts I felt the big surge of power the downloop will generate in the turn once I get it nailed down. I'm also going to be experimenting with bringing in my trim line, which from other threads I've been given some excellent tips on mastering the use of a DP kite. As will be plain to see from the videos I've posted as of late, I am a real rookie. Having lots of fun though!

I'm sure you are right about tacking at a more downwind direction as well. By the time I descended to the lower field the wind was really dying out and I'm not sure what would have worked at that point (short of the downloop of course). What you didn't see was all the waiting around that day provided, standing rock still waiting for any wind at all! The winds generated in the summer in the Utah mountains are anything but constant. They start to kick in during the early afternoon, peaking at about 3-4 PM but then die off by 5 or so. What that ends up meaning is I stare at the wind from my desk in the afternoon when I'm working and then get out to dying winds later in the day! Dang this cursed work stuff!

Yeah it's like that around here during the summer too. I work evenings and start work at 5pm just as the wind picks up, but the weekend is here now and I plan to buggy the park tomorrow. Good times!

Looping in low wind takes much longer as you found out. Normally I'll grab and pull a steering line just to help it around. I'll also do this when the wind is too high and where a big powerful downloop would lose me too much up wind ground. A quick half stalled half powered loop is better unless you want a huge powerslide!

Just grab and pull the steering line until the kite starts to loop. Once it's half way around you can put your hand back on the bar. Easy.

Remember to steer your bug a little downwind when initiating the downloop otherwise you will lose speed, you may even OBE. Steer the bug back on course again as the kite starts it's up-loop, then expect a secondary boost as the kite crosses the window.

Redsky - those are great pointers. I was back at that spot today but some kids were playing baseball on the lower field so I couldn't go 3D (what were they thinking?). I had thought of pulling on the line with my hand earlier today so I'm really happy to see you write about that. Part of what makes this sport fun is how much stuff you can learn and perfect. I know I am barely scratching the surface. I'll get some more footage by and by! :P
