Butt scudding in high winds!

Soooo...I blew off work at 4:00pm and took the 4 minute ride from home to the beach because the flag on my front lawn was pegged horizontal and I wanted to see what was up at the beach. The sky was grey and the wind was howling at 25mph, with gusts in the realm of 35.

Being the A-hole thrill seeker that I am, I broke out my son's BestKiteBoarding 2-line 2.5 meter trainer kite, launched it, and walked upwind 50 yards or so and took a seat on the most rock-free part of the beach I could find. I proceeded to repeatedly dive the kite through the wind window, chickening out and parking it as best I could in the worst of gusts. (1:45 in the video, for example.)

I was wishing I had one of those round metal "flying saucer" type discs that we used to use in the snow when I was a kid (50 years ago). Sitting in that and getting pulled along would have been a lot easier on my jeans and on my a$$.

Had fun, though!! Really gotta get me a harness and a landboard. If we get the 5" of snow on Sunday, I might head out with a snowboard.

Anyway, interested parties can see: https://youtu.be/lsT9rMRhg2U

Skip to the end if you want to see the butt marks I left in the sand!

Ahh, the simple pleasures of life. Butt scuds are great. Have you tried superman scuds? Lay on your front and downloop the kite. Takes a little nerve at first but its big fun. The kite will lift your torso off the sand leaving your legs dragging. The most nerve racking scuds are the backwards superman, lay down on your back and downloop. These often end badly as you have to downloop while looking in the opposite direction of the kite. Mmmmmm torso, now you got me thinking. I'd like to see the guy in the video below pull a scudding prank in shallow water on a beach full of kitesurfers.

Yeah, I had the camera mounted on my helmet. Should've taken it off and set it on the sand, but I thought of that a bit too late....Once launched I had my hands full in that wind! Soooo...I had to settle for a shot of the trail left in the sand when all was said and done.

I wasn't really planning on posting the video (and I'll be taking it down by tomorrow) but I thought the trails left on the sand needed some context. It was a hoot, though. Like I said above, I need a better way "to get around" under power than scudding on my butt. It was my only choice today as I'm not yet "equipped." It's all Brandon's (abkayak) fault. He keeps buying up all the good stuff - harnesses and whatnot - before anyone else gets a shot at it! ;)

I know they're still calling for snow this week-end, but I'd be willing to take another drive out to AB on Sunday if it doesn't materialize.

Also, I've taken this coming week off from work - literally my first "vacation" in six years, so, if the wind is right and you're going to be out and about, lemme know!

I remember the first power kite I bought. after a couple minutes of trying to stand and fly it I dug a hole for my but to sit in and 2 holes for my feet. Sending the kite across the window and trying not to come up out of my hole, I broke the power line. GRRRR
wadded up the kite and headed across the street to the kite shop and told the guy the line broke and after he started to replace the line set he found the kite had a tab missing from the broken line. free upgrade to the next larger size and heavier line set. Back across the street to the holes that were waiting for my back side. It didnt seem that far of a butt scud until I had to walk back. glad the beach was clean of garbage, would have been an eye opener if I would have found a pokey thing shoved up my pants.
Nothing like the first scud.

LOL! I remember coming across that video from some other thread on PKF. Great job on the video. Looks like the grass surface was harder on your pants than our sandy (shell-filled and sometimes rocky) beach.

Must be a #@%$#! waiting on a decent wind...frankly, it blows a bit too much around here at times - certainly for my skill and comfort level. :(

This morning looks promising for the full vent Rev.

Always one of my favorite videos of yours! Thanks for the re-post. "New Amsterdam": who knew?

Glad you provided context for that pants shot at the end. Seeing those from an Atlanta boy out of the blue I would have assumed a trip too many to Moe's. "Welcome to Moe's!!!"

Thanks guys, that was a fun day!.... That is the baseball fields at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church which was my former employer. East Cobb, Randy so pretty close to you! It is open to the public unless there is a game or practice scheduled. When I worked there I would go out and static fly on my lunch break which is what the sessions were that made that video.

Yay butt scuds!... Also the same day I filmed my kite packing video with the 4m Core I just sold.

Thanks Spencer - I'll look into it. You might be able to try scudding on a sandy beach at Galts Ferry, Lake Allatoona, though it may not be big enough. The water is still pretty low, but within a few weeks it will be filling up, and park will be getting more crowded.

Hi...Kelly??

Don't know if you saw my video from last Sunday's fun and frolic. That you coming into the pix on your land board at the 3:40 mark?? Not sure of people's user names, but it's the same kite as in your avatar.

It's "orchestral metal" akin to Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Had to do something to liven up an otherwise humdrum 4 minutes. Youtube takes a dim view of using copyrighted material so I had to go for a group that doesn't object to the exposure.

I listen to every genre of music from Mozart to Metalica with the notable exception of country and big band. Can't stand either of those.
