I'm in the uk and have a budget around 700 pounds I'm 5.7. and about 8st. Normal wind here is around 15mph. Not sure on exactly the right gear to be looking at so any advice would be great.

I'm sure a few of the Depower experts will speak up.. I'd highly encourage you to decide on the kite you'll have at first and then spend a ton of time getting to know every aspect of that's kite's behavior before stepping on the wheels. To my knowledge the Apex is a great kite. I just don't personally know the best entry point for a Depower..

The board im getting anyway as I'm gonna use it for walking the dog on the beach aswell. My legs just can't keep up with a husky on there own haha. I've done a good bit of reading on the kite and I think I'm happy with that one unless someone says its a no no. Harnesses is where I get a bit lost. Waist, seat, clips here and there. Just won't one that's gonna be right for the kit ill have.

There's a known bug which will cause a post to fail if there is a "non-standard" character within the text.

Others will have various opinions, but even if you're thinking of heading toward depowers, I would still recommend starting with a 3-meter fixed bridle foil. You'll see another similar conversation here:

Go ahead... tell me to "go fly a kite!" Please!

You're definitely approaching the issues from the right direction.. I'm hoping someone will chime in here shortly with the Sage advice I know exists around here. I know I've only heard good things about the PL Divine harness but I don't know the specifics..

I ordered a 2014 Liquid Force Luxury harness that just arrived a few days ago and it seems pretty great for the money, $49. Another member found one for $70-80 in a larger size. Not sure you'll be able to find that deal over in the UK, but I bet there's some other harnesses that are a year or two old model that you can save quite a bit of money on. I found YouTube reviews really helpful. This guy has a few good ones: https://youtu.be/0aDgmHqFocY

Also, as a very new power kiter myself I'll tell you I'm glad I picked up a 3.3m trainer kite to practice with before buying a larger one. Even at 3.3m it's more than enough to give you a scare in a gust, especially when you're attached with a harness and can't just let go of the thing. I think there are a number of people selling used trainer kites in the for sale section of this forum that you could get a deal on. I sure wouldn't want to start with an 8m.

Yeah, that was me. I got mine, too. Very comfortable and a lot of material and workmanship for the money. I tried it out with my 3M Beamer and a strop line...and it didn't go well at all. Clearly, I do NOT have the hang of allowing the hook to take the strain. I'm too used to using my arms to resist the power of the kite...so the strop kept falling out of the hook. :(

I'm sure it's a learned skill...just not one I possess at the moment. Makes me wonder if I've purchased something I'll never get the hang of enough to actually to use...

Oh well, at least I'm having a ball with the landboard. Waiting for the right time and place to combine landboard and kite.

Frank,

Nothing worthwhile comes easy. What we do requires us to set memory reflexes to do stuff we never have before. I think all of us have wanted to give up at some point? Making it to that next level is the reward!

Ross,

You aren't too far off base looking at the Apex in 8m. If you had somebody around to show you the ropes I wouldn't warn you against it. You want to end up flying depower.

It is much easier, safer and more rewarding to figure things out with a 3m fixed bridle kite.

Here is the hard thing to get your head around: Fixed Bridle kites are usually bridled for full on power they generate more power in a smaller size for many reasons. An 8m Depower kite won't actually produce more power than a 3m FB in very low winds. It actually won't even fly until the wind gets past about 6mph. Won't produce usable power until the wind is above 10mph. The 3m FB will fly early but lack in usable power.!

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.
Flysurfer : 19m Speed 2 SA, 7m Pulse
Peter Lynn :18m Phantom, 15m Synergy, 10m Synergy, 1200 Farc, 460 Sarc, 130 Tarc, 5m Peel, 4.2m , 6.4, 8.5 C-Quads, 3.5 LS2 single skin.

Rides: Flexi / P.L. Frankin'Buggy , Shaped + straight skiis, sand skis, Coyote blades. Core 95 ATB. RKB R2 ATB .
