Fairly real time wind data

A resource that I often use for wind data prior to heading out for a session is airport weather data nearest to where I plan to go. The website that I use is:

https://www.aviationweather.gov/adds/metars/

If I enter 'kgon' (Groton/New London Airport) into the search field and select 'Translated' as shown in the first pic below, the result is shown in the second pic:

w1.JPG - 47kB

w2.JPG - 60kB

This data is updated hourly - at roughly on the hour - and it is updated within the hour if significant weather changes occur. All times in the 'Raw' format are Universal Time.

As can be seen under the 'Winds' field in this data above, these conditions are pretty perfect for my skill level at static flying...

Google search results will gladly tell you the 'ICAO Identification' of the airport nearest you, or you can use the following website to find it:

http://www.azworldairports.com/indexes/p-apice.cfm

Regarding ICAO Id's, the first letter is country specific (eg: K = USA, E = Europe...), and the next three characters are airport specific.

Lastly, many of the small, uncontrolled airports do not report weather data, so don't give up if you get no results. Widen your search a bit to a larger airport, and of course, never fly a kite very near one...:)

Is that a NOAA bouy? If so, I use it for seas data for boating. Don't we live in a great age with all this data on the ready?

The Windfinder app works well for me in the southwest US.
Not sure if it is global?
https://www.windfinder.com
I use the app on my iPhone.

Yes! I have Windfinder on my iPhone as well. I went ahead and paid the nominal fee for the 'pro' version to eliminate the annoying ads, and I'm quite happy with it really. I have it all set up with a list of nearby wind readings as 'favorites', and I love its fairly accurate forecast ability as well.

My only true gripe with this app is that it often shows ideal wind speeds for rockin' the kites when I am otherwise engaged...
