I don't see any posts on it yet but I've learned that Corey Jensen passed away earlier today. I've tried to copy and paste what Andrew Beattie wrote but I'm getting the blank posting so I'll try and edit and repost after this.
I remember Corey from the early days of my attendance as the larger kite festivals and then a follower of his Buggy Newz newsletter and then long time friend through buggying. I always looked forward to his warm welcome and great stories whenever we met up on the playa or visiting his shop in Vegas. We have kept in touch like all of us do in our big kite buggy family and it' will leave an empty buggy space on the playa but I'll remember him with great fondness whenever I get that dust in my hair or grit in my teeth - farewell old friend

Andrew Beattie posted on facebook a little earlier today when we learned that Corey Jensen passed away. Andrew wrote some fine words about Corey and many of us will share similar sentiments:

Today, there is a big space in the sky. The space left by the passing of one of my dearest friends, Corey Jensen.
To me, Corey burned with a passion for the spirit of kite flying and kite buggying. He understood the reason why we fly and took the time to share this with anyone and everyone he met.
Whilst I am sad at his passing, it gives me pause to realise how much he has passed on to me. I hope that I can do him justice and continue to share the joy, delight, wonder and fellowship of kite flying with the enthusiasm and insight that he demonstrated.
He once said: "Often we stop ourselves from living to the fullest for the silliest reasons. Money has got to be one of the all-time silliest."
He lived a full life. Many of us are richer for it.
Rest in Peace my friend.

I wandered into his store in 2011 to buy a power kite, introducing myself and telling him that I was on vacation form Canada. Once he realized that I had almost no experience other than a Rush Pro and 2-line stunt kites, there was no way that I was going to walk out of his shop with anything that I might possibly hurt myself with; his suggestion was that I come back when I could fly the Rush with my eyes closed. I did, however, leave almost two hours later with stories about the history of kiting and buggying, and a respect for the store owner that put my interests before his.

Fly safely Corey.

We first met Corey at WSKIF, Washington State International Kite Festival, in Long Beach, WA in 1986. He announced during the event and was the auctioneer at the banquet at the end of WSIKF. He got my wife and I into buggying at the 1993 AKA Convention in Seaside, OR. Before we headed for home we bought our first traction kite and on our way home bought our first buggy. In January of the following year we joined him at the Buggy Boogie Thang at Ivanpah Dry Lake.

Corey was a unique individual and we always looked forward to seeing him at kite festivals and buggy events.

He will be sadly missed by all in the kiting/buggying community.

Good Winds Corey!

I met Corey at the 1991 AKA Convention in Jacksonville, FL. He MC'd at the banquet and was colorful as always. A few years later at an AKA convention in Wildwood we shared a room. That was an experience so colorful I cannot describe it in writing. At the auction that year I recall Corey auctioning off the promise to "not teach your children anything".

Famously Corey promoted the dry lakes of the Mojave for Kite buggying in his cover story in American Kite, Buggy Newz and the Buggy Boogey Thangs after the West Coast KTA conventions. He jumped started all of the foolishness in the desert we have grown to love so much.

We all owe a huge debt to the Corey Llama for promoting this tiny little sport we love so much.

Regards,
Philip

Corey

the parody of the American Kite magazine cover that Corey was featured on in 1993. I quickly made this up as a joke donation for the AKA convention auction and Corey got a good laugh out of it and it went for way more money than I ever expected.
