other dry lakes to visit
Had a great time again this year - too bad i got there for the tail end - but did stay and buggy after most people had left, we had good wind and lots
of room!
I took a trip over to check out the new skywalk at the Grand Canyon and passed a large dry lake on the way. i crossed Hoover Dam and drove southeast
before turning north passing Dolan Springs, the dry lake was off to the east with an access road cutting the bottom edge - it seemed big from a
distance and even looking at it on google (attached photos) compared to Ivanpah. Anyone been there before - is it worthwhile for one of the pre-event
stops?

That is Red lake. Corey gave a report on the lake bed under kite beach/buggy camp. Not much has been said about it in a couple of years.

planning on going there this month or next month if all goes right.
I used to live in Kingman and we camped out there all the time. It's nice and out of the way, about 40 miles outside of Kingman, and not too many
people drive by the road. I don't remember ever seeing any atv's out there, mostly beacuse kingman is surrounded by wild desert, much like Vegas used
to be.
By the way the road is gravel most of the way, but is fairly maintained, or at least used to be when I lived there. Not many know this, but the
horrible movie Mars Attacks was shot there.
Also a nice bonus to anyone considering this playa, the lake is about 40 min. opposite the direction of Kingman. As many of saw and felt, the morning
and early afternoons would be nice by some water, then head back for some almost sure later afternoon winds. Some supplies may be picked up at the
convenience market in Meadview by the lake, but no gas, so bring plenty of that.
Should be a relatively short drive once the hoover damn bypass is done.
If you think it\'s hard explaining HOW something works, try explaining WHY it doesn\'t work.

Red Lake, AZ Update:
Currently the road from Kingman (Stockton Hill Rd.) is paved all the way.
They finished paving last year.
Red Lake is about 6 miles long, as long as Ivanpah, but Red Lake is ROUND!
A string of power lines along the north/eastern edge don't really intrude.
Some fencing along the southern end also intrudes onto the lakebed, but frankly we haven't buggied that far down yet.
The surface can be softer than we find at Ivanpah, but that affects autos more than buggies.
Access from Hwy 93 (Las Vegas to Kingman) is at the Dolan Springs turnoff.
Go east about 25 miles (the road to Meadview) to the intersection with Stockton Hill Rd.
Turn south on Stockton Hill Rd and go about 4-5 miles to where the lakebed comes right up beside the road.
The access onto the lakebed is obvious there.
From Kingman (I-40) take the Stockton Hill Rd. exit and go north.
Go all the way north (about 35 miles) until you come to the same place where the lakebed comes right up beside the road.
The bridge over the canyon above Hoover Dam is not expected to be completed until 2009-2010 at the earliest.
At this time, the drive is about 1.5-2 hours from Las Vegas.
Depending on traffic at the dam on the return, waits of over 1 hour have occurred.
The bridge will bring Red Lake to within an hour of town.
We don't talk about it much for several reasons.
One is that by keeping it sort of quiet, we might not get so quickly overrun.
Watching the buzzing hordes descending on El Mirage every weekend has increased our awareness of the effects of growth.
Another is that we're not an organized group.
We are very spontaneous.
Perhaps on Friday night at the park, a few of us, with nothing else planned that weekend, might descide to go buggy Red.
It often happens just like that.
The kite buggy is an adventure craft.
So portable and lightweight that it is available and convenient.
What a wonderful combination!
Safen Up! Buggy On!
