Looking for a new helmet

Yeah I've got 3 but I need a good one. Why 3 currently? Well it started with the one one the left. That was the first and only I owned. But it's a brain cooker in the summer. So I got the white one for hot weather. I sealed off the vents on the two winter ones. The middle one is a size larger so I can run warm head pieces underneath.

Those skate/bmx helmets are kinda all the same from the plastic shell and thick hard foam. But where the differences are and what is nicer in the more expensive ones is the straps and the buckle hardware. Also the soft foam pads.

I have a lot of trouble with the little plastic piece that holds the side straps in a v or y configuration breaking and the helmet never fitting right and keeps sliding down.

A $15 helmet is my price starting point.

Have any of you sourced or seen a helmet that is trimmed out nice? Nice foam and good strap hardware, etc?

I've got a bern I use for kiteboarding. It fits really snug and I find the snuggnes on the sides of my head to be uncomfortable and distracting. I never have gotten use to it.

Spend $15 on a helmet? Sounds like it's too late for a helmet, you already broke your brain... I don't want to be too rude, but you might as well be wearing nothing if you're wearing a $15 dollar helmet....

I would recommend the giro remedy or the bell drop, both full face helmets.

Erratic winds is in the right direction. For kitesurfing, a wakeboarding type helmet is probably one of your only options but if your in a buggy and you like to press the limits then a true motorcycle helmet is really the only way to go. On light wind days I will wear a skate/wakeboarding helmet but as conditions get nuclear I only wear a motorcycle helmet. dot, snell, ansi rating blah, blah, blah. I like HJC but there are many good brands that all fit somewhat differently. The cool thing is that you don't have to guess on fitment. Just go down to your local motorcycle shops and try them on to see what you like best. I had one serious impact under extreme conditions years ago that I'm grateful for having worn a real helmet. I wouldn't be here today if I had worn a skate type helmet that day. Just my opinion of course,,, you need to decide for yourself what's right for you. Best of luck

Mood: Get in my buggy!

Needless to say I'm a big fan of helmets and agree that this just doesn't seem the right place to skimp.

http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=32253

The link above is to a thread I started a few years ago that I feel fortunate to have been able to write at all. Scroll down a bit in the thread to see the cracked helmet and farther still to see a scan of my subdural hematoma that could have killed me. I normally wore a full motorcycle helmet but that particular day it was really hot and I went with my downhill skiing helmet.

In the buggy I now use this helmet by giro: https://www.giro.com/p/disciple-mips-bike-helmet/10000000150...

It has tons of vents so I don't get too hot and I happens to fit me very well.

Not getting preachy here; just (sadly) speaking from experience.

Windstruck..just read your post about what happened to you, thanks for the link.

I am just about to buy my first helmet to start buggying and wanted to get a cheap one quickly. But now i think I will take my time in choosing a good one.

The phrase I have heard so often is $10 helmet for a $10 head.

Mine helmet is a 100% (brand) Aircraft (model)
Aircraft

This sport is dangerous enough...do your entire family a favor and not have them find out that your ignored them in your will (you DO have a will right!?).

I have had motorcycles for 45 years and always had a top level helmet and only rode without a helmet once in my life.

Ok...like Windstruck I too am preaching. We have both crashed and both cracked our helmets.

Troll Craigslist...you would be surprised at the number of people who buy helmets and never use them. Heck, I just found a $150 helmet, never used for $30. I am going there to buy it for my brother tomorrow! Awesome...thanks RTZ.

Make sure that the helmet is less than 2 yrs old. They all have date codes in them.

Best!

When riding on dry lakes, I have a nice snowmobile helmet that was gifted to me that worked great. I wear my bicycle helmet on the beaches. Luckily I've never truly utilized a helmet. Nothing bad has ever happened at speed. All my troubles seem to happen when I'm trying to stay in one place, turn around or something like that. I've been rolled out a few times with light taps of the helmet on the ground but never anything serious. That said, my bike helmet cost about $75 it seems.

I wear a skiing helmet I bought at costco; don't recall the brand. It was intended to be an interim lid, because I assumed it would be too hot. It is not ( not sure why).
I am sure that it makes me look like the Great Gazoo, but that just adds to my charm. When I was lofted, I was glad to have it. I landed flat on my back, but my head must have hit pretty good (sand or no sand). My back and shoulders still hurt years later, but I had no ill effects to my noggin. I wear a ball cap underneath for the visor, but have often wondered what would happen to the little nob on the top if I landed the right (wrong) way? Jeff BigKid scared me off the full face helmets with his stories of caving his whole upper chest in when the lower part was driven down upon impact. I think he's lucky to be alive, so maybe the helmet did its job.
