build your own buggy

I don't know much about buggying but I know more than this guy. I can't say to much though because he's got more experince than I do, in that he has actually tried it.

Its a funny read- Build your own buggy

My favorite part was when he attached the kite to the buggy.

Gotta give the guy credit for giving it a go. Sometimes I forget how spoiled we can be. I am curious though as to what his second attempt will look like with the use of pipe and a welder.

I made my buggy out of an old bike with no plans in mind and it worked very well (not for sand use though) altough it looks like a demonic big wheel. :flaming: The only issue i have is exposed spokes how could i cover them? (I already lost a line set to it) I was thinking zip ties to hold on some sort of quard but i cant figure out what to use as a cover. Any ideas?

here is a pic

okay maybe not how do i upload a pic?

Ok, NPW. You need to change your sig. The last two days I've tried to fly, the sun was DIRECTLY in my face at about 10:30. Maybe if you change it my luck will change!

I'll change it and be sure to bring sunglasses whenever you fly I see your smiley figured it out. (i sewed a pocket on my bag to keep my glasses in) I had this luck the last 2 days because you have about a 50 50 shot of the wind blowing at the sun:evil:

Our normal wind is from the west. this has the afternoon sun behind you lighting up your kite. The crazy stuff on the east coast this week has the wind from the east. So the wind is actually blowing but I can't look at the kite even with 5% lenses. I was crying like a baby with tears streaming down my cheeks trying to figure out where my kite was. No crashes though. I'll let you know if my wind direction changes or if it just stops blowing again.:(

I always keep sunglasses in the car, usually an extra pair of tinted uv safety glasses. While they don't look as cool, they've done their job well in both protecting my eyes from the sun and from other gunk, like sand while getting dragged face first. I like knowing if I whack my head on something the glasses wil help protect me instead of being a problem. They're available at most hardware stores like Home Depot for around $15.

I had a pair in the car but only had 15 minutes to fly and didn't want to put her down to run all the way back to the car. It was cloudy when I got out of the car and then the clouds dissipated after I was in the air. Almost as bad as the wind dying after you get all unpacked. At least I did get to feel the pull for awhile and try out a new flying field.

Yeah i know it has exposed spokes... I need to fix that not because I'm too concerned about my lines or handles getting caught (although i do need to fix it if i ever want to buggy with others) but the real reason i need to cover them is because my friends think its funny to play "lets throw sticks in his spokes because he's paying attention to his kite" It sucks cuz your just riding along and then WHACK! and the kite rips you out of the buggy. I was thinking plastic sheets cut into a disc and zip-tied to the spokes.

For buggy version 2.0, make the rear axle a little wider and somehow get the sides of the seat deeper. The further you sit down into the buggy the harder it is to get pulled out, the wider axle will help it track and keep it from flipping. With a seat like yours you could fairly easily just lengthen the bottom and back and that should put the rope up higher on your hips.

Then once you finally get a harness, go with a seat one, it'll put the center of pull much lower than a waist harness. This low pull will be almost right against the side of the seat transferring power directly to the buggy. It's a lot easier on the pilot and the low center of pull makes it harder to get pulled out/flipped.

Thanks. there wont be an actual version 2 more like 1.1 (just upgrading #1) now has 16" pneumatic wheels and the axle will soon be mounted to steel instead of wood. the seat will soon follow (in steel) i might split off the rear piece (like on a real buggy) and drop a fabric seat in

Well, remember, for freestyle sitting on top is good, easier to shift your weight, for speed/cruising/learning, deeper is better, low and wide.

I haven't had any issues with picking up wheels because of axle length. And i dont know if they make threaded rod any longer than i have (i think they do) the only thing is that it is a perfect size for the backpack method and fits in a trunk with the front tire off quite nicely. And i havn't had any issues with handles as far as seat position goes so until i get a welder (I currently mooch of my neighbor) i will keep the seat as is.

Might be badly overpowered, Saw a guy down at SOBB, riding an ATB with a paraglider, started out flying by towing up, manlift style, one big guy on the ground hauling them up with a decent wind, then he tried the ATB, didn't end so well. Somewhat really badly overpowered.

Yeah manlifting would be awesome. Could you man lift with like a 200 foot line with a pg in medium wind? Also the ropes do help somewhat with side to side movement but actually hold the seat up.

http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?action=attachme...

But I am considering attaching a triangular piece of fabric from the base and back of the seat to the rope, to create a side:wow:

NO KIDDING! i went out with my buggy and NPW in 23mph wind (what the weather channel said) OH MY GOD that was so sick it took me about 15 seconds to cover the school sports fields with some uphills and on rough grass. covered about a 1/8 mile. I AM HOOKED FOR LIFE screw paragliding! (not really though) So i guess i should take advice from a "traction kite know it all" and put on some sides. If you post like a million are you like a traction kite god?:tumble:

hey man you should lose the GFAK 3m for good...there is nothing worse than a two line kite for this stuff..I accidentally left mine on my truck and took off...it was never to be seen again..good riddance...just get the pansh legend 4.5 m...and a set of hq ultra handles...140 bucks total ....for the priece and ease...you won't ever go back...plus I have given up on the NPW..they are good for the desert ...maybe...but once you get a stable foil that NPW will seem like a jelly fish on a leash...there is nothing more exciting then locking in with a good foil...its like a sail and you just keep going faster......

Yeah well i need my $ for pg right now but maybe i could sell the 3 meter on craigslist for 150 (bought for 180 but people are stupid) And for buggying right now my NPW suits me (plus its kinda like my baby) but i do know what you mean by a jellyfish on a leash. the most you can do is cross the power zone for power. no dives or spins like a foil. I would probably make a foil or buy one when i make my buggy better (when i get a welder) wow i need way too much stuff. :spin:
