I've been flying 2-line kites for... over ten years. I spend one week each year with my in-laws just outside Stuart, FL - this year's trip is less than a month away.

I'd like to buy a power kite, preferably something I can later fly as a casual stunt kite (perhaps with a wind-blocker at the bridle to reduce the pull). Then, I'd love to find somewhere in the vicinity of Stuart (which, BTW, is about 40 miles north of West Palm Beach) where I could rent a board and get some lessons.

Any suggestions as to a kite meeting those criteria would be most appreciated. If anyone knows somewhere to learn on the north side of West Palm Beach, that'd be awesome, too.

Surf kites don't really make good recreational fliers. They are huge, fly slowly, and seldom do more than fly from side to side. Tight spins and high performance control is not required as their main purpose is to supply stable power for surfing.

But you could buy a trainer surf kite. These are small kites used to teach basic control while standing on land. They are small and therefore faster than the full size surf kites. You can't surf with them, but the advantage would be that when you are ready for the water, you already have some experience with surf kite control.

Just a thought.

Additionally, I always promote taking lessons. You can try a variety of gear before buying and take advantage of the experience of others rather than starting from scratch on your own. You'll become better faster! Safer too.

I've heard there are many good kite surfing schools in Florida who provide gear.
