Hey Brian,
All forms of land traction can travel upwind (short of kite jumping or scudding). Buggiers and kite skaters sail across beaches and multi-terrain
surfaces upwind, crosswind, and downwind at speeds up to 60mph.

I use a Libre race buggy in addition to the kite skates featured on doomwheels.com. You can find instructions to build your own kite skates here:

I have not seen many mountain boards on the sand, but if you have a nice firm surface, boards should work fine too.

Quadrifoil Competition X-foils are my preference. They are powerful high performing foils.
Everyone has their personal favorite kite. I recommend trying several kites and pick the one that feels best to you and provides the most efficient,
controllable power. Quad-line foils work best for land use.
