I have recently bought my first power kite (HQ Beamer III 3m), and I think that I might want to learn how to landboard aswell soon so I'm a newbie to this!

I know most boards are only suited to one thing, but I'd like one that I'd be able to go kiting with and also downhill. I'd like a fairly cheap one too - I'm not taking this hobby as seriously as most other people and I only have so much money :P

The only one that I've seen so far is a Scrub Photon for £90. It was suggested for a begginer to use with a kite. It's only 90cm long, 5.85 kg, and has skate trucks.

I'm 5 ft 11", 12 stone. Would this be too small? Would it also be unstable on downhill? And what are the best boards that I might buy?

Not familiar with the unit of measure "stone". Sounds cool saying it though. If you will help me with the conversion, I will begin using it in my everyday vocabulary.

Hehe, yes 1 stone is 14 pounds. So I am 168 lbs.

I have a GI board and I have used it for some downhill and a lot of kiteboarding. It has channel trucks and I would think those may be better if you are going hardcore down hill. I like the GI boards because you can swap the cubes and get a totally different ride (I think you can do that with the egg shocks on the MBS boards too).

If you are going to ride both downhill and with the kite, you shold set your bindings up for no healside bias. You're going to need to get over the board when riding down hill. Personally, I think no bias is better for kiting too as it allows you to get over the board to ride toeside as well as carve down wind easier when needed.

A longer board may be better for serious downhill and stiff trucks are also recommended (where loose can be better for kiting which is again why I like GI becuase I have 3 sets of cubes) and in reality a brake would be good for serious downhill but that is totally useless for kiteboarding. It all depends on how hardcore downhill you are planning on getting.

I probably won't go very hardcore at all, I will probably stick to cruising :P So would this board be OK?

I don't know anything about scrub boards - sorry. But my guess is that if its a normal board, and its suited for your weight, than it will be OK. They should list the ideal weight of the rider for the board on the scrub site.

Just had a look at scrub's website (didn't know they had one, I also had trouble finding it but I did in the end!). It confused me when they said it was suitable for juniors and beginners. But it said later on that it was best for people under 14 years old, and anybody older than that found it unstable and uncomfortable

I found the Scrub Quasar 2 - that's an entry level board, not much more expensive, and it's suitable for adults. They say that it can be used for downhill, freestyle and kiting, too

Srcub only works on dirt/grass...etc not pavement though. If it's what I am thinking of it's like a snowboard with 2 wheels in it and uses the edge to turn, like a snowboard. Not like an ATB that actually moves the wheels. If you really want to go downhill and kiting I would go ATB. My 2 cents.

Scrub is a normal landboard that works and is designed like all others. I know the board that NPWFever is thinking of and while I don't know the name of it I know for sure the Scrub Quasar and Photon are traditional landboards well suited for kiting.

Wow, Great info! I am trying to decide if I should try and make one or make the plunge and buy a board. It is great to read which ones really are good boards.
