Im looking to pick up one of those little hand held wind meters. You guys have any recomendations on ones you like? Im not looking for the fanciest thing out there, just one that works well.

I use this...
http://www.ambientweather.com/lacrteeahawi.html

very inexpensive but works. I held it up next to other more expensive meters when out at NABX and it showed much the same values.

I've got a blue Kestrel that I got for Xmas this year. It seems to work quite well but if I had to get another one I think I might opt for one that is not directional. I think the company is called Windtronic. It's silver colored. Might not be worth the extra cost though.

Ditto for me on the LaCrosse. No complaints and it was one of the most inexpensive I found at the time.

I do not fine the directional aspect of the device to be a problem; you just need to be within a few degrees. The lanyard hanging down makes a good wind streamer. I would just make the lanyard shorter. It is long enough to hang from my pocket and, when I'm in the bug, the lanyard gets caught under the wheel and picks my pocket of the wind meter. Hapenned twice. Sometimes I learn slow.

I've got the lacrosse too..haven't used it much, but its nice so far. I learned I think winds are much heavier then they really are.

Hey Angus....be careful....don't put that lanyard around your neck. :wow::wow: That sounds scary, the wheel grabs the meter outta your pocket!!

I also have the Lacrosse. Works like a charm. I just got back from a walk with it to help judge the windspeed by the feel on my face. It's teaching me a lot! I'm gettin' to be a fairly good guesser.

I just got my LaCrosse, it seems a little bit low to me, I have an anemometer @ 50' at my house the LaCrose is just about 5 MPH low on the high end but accurate on the low end, probably due to obstruction. I am going to continue the build of a real (cup driven part) anemometer to put on the camper.

I didn't say it was worth nothing, it is worth a million. If you get drug and the meter says 10, I am betting it is more like 15 higher off the ground it is not very scientific to hold it in your hand.

I stuck mine out the car window and it read within 3 mph of what I was driving. 25 act 23+read and Its normal for wind to be higher at elevation

The Lacrosse seems a little unprotected, this one looks to me to be worth the money if your buying the first time and th only time.

If I would have just seen it first :)

The Lacrosse feels pretty stout, and seems protected enough. If you needed to cover it, you could always make a case or use a hard, or soft, case for glasses.
